The Hidden Gem Inside of McLanahan’s: Agostinelli Café and Juice Bar

McLanahan’s Downtown Market on South Allen Street is known as the destination spot for many students to purchase anything from groceries and household appliances to Grab-N-GO food, fresh sushi and even organic products. McLanahan’s is also the home to Agostinelli Deli where students can purchase premium Boar’s Head meats and cheese and can indulge in fresh deli sandwiches, wraps and an array of delicious premade food.

What most students don’t know, however, is that over the summer Agostinelli’s opened Agostinelli Café and Juice Bar in the front part of McLanahan’s – and they brought along something students in State College haven’t been able to find before.

“My roommate went to [McLanahans] one Saturday morning and found [Agostinelli’s Café and Juice Bar] after a night out and said it was perfect so I had to come try it,” said sophomore supply chain major Claire Sullivan gripping her Super Green Raw Juice.

Agostinelli’s Café and Juice Bar is the place to go to find true Italian style espresso based drinks, smoothies, Gelato and especially cool, their fresh raw juices that are made right in front of you.

Alli Bruce, Penn State Alum, works behind the counter at Agostinelli’s Café and she loves the versatility of the menu options they offer. “It’s cool, we are like a bakery, juice bar. We are a café that acts as a juice bar and then acts like a bakery, and we just have all the yummy stuff,” says Bruce as she juices down kale leaves.

The drink menu is split into three boards. You can get fresh raw juice, hot drinks or cold drinks.

The hot and cold drinks is where you can find your Italian style espressos, macchiato, chai lattés, ice coffee, etc. But the juice bar menu is where they have the drinks that you wont be able to find anywhere else on campus.

A medium sized 12 oz. raw juice is $4.75 and a large sized 16 oz. is $6.90. The featured drinks are the Super Green, Wakeup Call, Hangover Helper, V-6, Cool as Cake, and Tropical and you can add booster shots to your juices for $3 like ginger, honey and lemon, or you can add a detox supplement called liquid chlorophyll.

“My favorite is the Super Green. It has kale, cucumber, parsley, apple, lemon, celery and ginger. It’s really good,” said Bruce.

Bruce chops up the ingredients and puts them into a huge juicer right when you order and your drink is ready in seconds. Agostinelli’s Café and Juice Bar is the perfect destination to get a detox drink to cleanse your system or to get a filling snack or healthy meal replacement. But of course, the café isn’t all healthy and raw. Agostinelli’s serves freshly baked goods such as French Toast Muffins, S’more Cookies, and Vanilla Funfetti Cupcakes, and also carries brownies, cupcakes, muffins and macaroons from the dedicated gluten free bakery Good Seed Baking Co. They also feature Stefano’s Gelato and have flavors like Caramel Sea Salt, White Chocolate Raspberry, Bananas Foster, Bourbon Caramel Gingersnap and more.

Right now Agostinelli’s Café is featuring a new green smoothie made with kale, banana, Greek yogurt, almond milk, peach puree and ice. This café and juice bar is the hidden gem of McLanahan’s and is giving State College a little taste of healthy and a little taste of Italy.
