EDITORIAL DIVISION

Our editorial division consists of all writers, graphic designers, photographers, video and web technicians for VALLEY Magazine.

Each of the four divisions has its own separate application, all of which can be found below. You may be called for an interview with your prospective director.

If you are interested in applying for more than one position, please make note of this on your applications and note which other divisions you are applying to.


Writers

No prior journalism experience is required! All prospective writers will join our staff first as web writers, responsible for contributing at minimum one article per week to our website. After one semester on staff, you will then be eligible to write for our biannually published print magazine.

Admittance into our writing staff is based on a combined application/audition/interview process.

 

Design/Creative

The Design/Creative division for VALLEY Magazine is responsible for visual identity of the brand across the website, print magazine and social media. Members will have the opportunity to create graphics for social media and the magazine. 

Qualifications
  • Working knowledge of Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator and/or InDesign
  • Ability to produce graphics with a few days turnaround
  • Ability to take constructive criticism from Design and Creative directors
Responsibilities
  • Create graphics for social media and the magazine
  • Clear communication

 

Photo

The Photo division for VALLEY Magazine is responsible for photographing original content for articles posted to our website as well as for articles in our print magazine. Admittance into our photography staff is based on a combined application and portfolio review process. Photo assignments can consist of commercial, advertisement, beauty/fashion and events around campus.

Qualifications
  • Must own or have access to a DSLR camera
  • Proficient experience with Photoshop or Lightroom
  • Good time-management skills
  • Respect for deadlines
Responsibilities
  • Attend weekly meetings
  • Shoot for our semesterly print editions
  • Submit photographs for 1-2 online articles per week
  • Shoot photos for social media

 

Video

The Video division for VALLEY Magazine is responsible for creating compelling video content that aligns with VALLEY brand guidelines for our website. Members will have hands-on experience with pitching, videoing and editing.

Qualifications
  • Respect for deadlines
  • Great discussion and group work skills
  • Good time management skills
  • Must have Adobe Cloud (free for PSU students)
  • Great effort in terms of learning
  • Ability to use Media Tech equipment or higher grade
Responsibilities
  • Be present at weekly meetings
  • Develop at least two pieces a semester
  • Learning editing software (Adobe Premiere and After Effects)
  • Be constructive during pitches and critiques

 

Web Team

The Web Team for VALLEY Magazine will be responsible for keeping the website up-to-date with innovative, interactive features. Applicants should have a background knowledge in information sciences and technology. They will work closely with the web director as well as with other directors to improve the website throughout the semester.

  • Knowledge of WordPress
  • App development
Responsibilities
  • Learning the ins and outs of WordPress
  • Work with other team members to field directors’ requests
  • Take the lead on ideas to further improve the website

BUSINESS DIVISION

Our business division is broken up into Advertising (Ad Sales), Events, Finance and Public Relations.

Advertising

The Advertising division for VALLEY Magazine is responsible for booking and developing print/online ads with local State College businesses, creating and updating media kits, and writing branded content articles.

Responsibilities
  • Attend weekly meetings
  • Contacting clients each week in the State College area
  • Keeping in contact with these clients
  • Gathering details from clients and keeping on top of payments
  • Pushing for both print and online advertisements
  • Write branded content articles for clients
  • Brainstorm new ideas for on-campus advertising

 

Events

The Events division for VALLEY Magazine is responsible for all promotional events, including our Launch Party and other seasonal events to promote newsletter subscriptions and readership.

Qualifications
  • Prior experience with event-planning is a plus but not required
  • Good time-management skills

  • Organized

  • Setting up/tearing down events

 

Finance

The Finance division for VALLEY Magazine will involve a lot of fundraising and creating new ways to draw in revenues.We are seeking creative, driven and committed applicants to join the team.

Responsibilities
  • Attend weekly meetings
  • Brainstorm ways to generate revenue
  • Track attendance at fundraisers
  • Allocate money raised to different divisions

 

Public Relations/Social Media

The Public Relations division for VALLEY Magazine is responsible for outreach to various businesses and organizations throughout the year. Members will also have the opportunity to work on various promotional efforts and VALLEY’s social media.

Qualifications
  • Attend weekly meetings
  • Familiarity with drafting/writing pitches
  • Outgoing personality
  • Working knowledge of Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, YouTube
  • Ability to comply with brand guidelines
Responsibilities

  • Conducting outreach
  • Booking on-campus promotions
  • Create strategies and promotions to better the reach of VALLEY
  • Stay on top of current events and social media trends
  • 24/7 administration over a social media account

WHAT IS EXPECTED OF ALL VALLEY MAGAZINE STAFF MEMBERS
  • Attend weekly Monday night meetings — Editorial and Business at 8 p.m.
  • Attend, participate and contribute to all VALLEY Magazine events.
  • Agree to not write or work for other publications specific to our campus. This includes The Daily Collegian, Onward State, HerCampus, The Odyssey Online and Spoon University (PSU).
