EDITORIAL DIVISION

Our editorial division consists of all print/web writers and web developers for VALLEY Magazine.

Each of the subdivisions has its own separate application, all of which can be found below. You may be called for an interview with your prospective director.

Writers

No prior journalism experience is required! All prospective writers will join our staff first as web writers, responsible for contributing at minimum one article per week to our website. After one semester on staff, you will then be eligible to write for our biannually published print magazine.

Admittance into our writing staff is based on a combined application/audition/interview process. The application is now open!

Web Developer

The Web Developer for VALLEY Magazine will be responsible for keeping the website up-to-date with innovative, interactive features. Applicants should have a background knowledge in information sciences and technology. They will work closely with the web director as well as with other directors to improve the website throughout the semester.

Responsibilities
  • Learning the ins and outs of WordPress
  • Work with other team members to field directors’ requests
  • Take the lead on ideas to further improve the website

CREATIVE DIVISION

Our creative division is broken up into Graphic Design, Photography and Video.

Each of the three subdivisions has its own separate application, all of which can be found below. You may be called for an interview with your prospective director.

Creative Directors

The creative director positions for VALLEY Magazine are responsible for overseeing and leading their individual creative teams and shaping the visual identity of the brand. The available positions for creative director are fashion director, design director, and photo director.

Fashion Director

Qualifications
  • Must have relevant styling experience or proof of skills
  • Be great online/thrift shopper
  • Be an expert at tag-tucking
  • Professional communication skills via email when communicating with stylists, models, and talent
Responsibilities
  • Working with Creative Director on the fashion and styling for the Beauty + Health, Fashion, and Cover Star shoots
  • Maintain a list of clothing/brand on each model to be captioned + credited in the print magazine
  • Maintain contact with models to release photos to them and tag them on VALLEY’s social media
  • Working with the Creative Director and the rest of Creative Team on the overall concept and vision for each print magazine
Photo Director
Qualifications
  • Must be proficient and have experience with professional studio lighting
  • Have access to a digital camera
  • Must be proficient in Adobe Photoshop, Lightroom and Bridge (more Adobe experience is a plus but is not required)
  • Has taken PHOTO 303 or higher level studio class
  • Must have access to the Photo Studio in Borland 020 and/or Room 019 in Borland Building
Responsibilities
  • Hiring Photography Staff for 2021-22 academic year
  • Appointing 2 Assistant Photo Directors for the 2020-21 academic year from your Photo Staff
  • Photographing, oversseing, lighting and directing the Beauty + Health spreads, Cover Star shoot, Fashion section, Section Opener shoot and editorial articles
  • Be able to teach and assist photo staff with lighting
  • Working with the Creative Director and rest of Creative Team on the overall concept and vision for the Fall and Spring Issues
Design Director
Qualifications
  • Must be a fourth-year majoring in Graphic Design
  • Have layout and editorial experience
  • Have experience making creative and visually-engaging graphics
  • Must be proficient in Adobe Suite
Responsibilities
  • Hiring Junior + Sophomore Designers
  • Designing and overseeing the layout of each print magazine
  • Working with Creative Director on maintaining and progressing VALLEY’s visual brand
  • Working with the Creative Diredctor and rest of Creative Team on the overall concept and vision for each print magazine
Design

The Design subdivision for VALLEY Magazine is responsible for visual identity of the brand across the website, print magazine and social media. Members will have the opportunity to create graphics for social media and the magazine. 

Qualifications
  • Working knowledge of Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator and/or InDesign
  • Ability to produce graphics with a few days turnaround
  • Ability to take constructive criticism from Design and Creative directors

Photo

The Photo subdivision for VALLEY Magazine is responsible for photographing original content for articles posted to our website as well as for articles in our print magazine. Admittance into our photography staff is based on a combined application and portfolio review process. Photo assignments can consist of commercial, advertisement, beauty/fashion and events around campus.

Qualifications
  • Must own or have access to a DSLR camera
  • Proficient experience with Photoshop or Lightroom
  • Good time-management skills
  • Respect for deadlines
Responsibilities
  • Attend weekly meetings
  • Shoot for our semesterly print editions
  • Submit photographs for 1-2 online articles per week
  • Shoot photos for social media
Video

The Video subdivision for VALLEY Magazine is responsible for creating compelling video content that aligns with VALLEY brand guidelines for our website. Members will have hands-on experience with pitching, videoing and editing.

Qualifications
  • Respect for deadlines
  • Great discussion and group work skills
  • Good time management skills
  • Must have Adobe Cloud (free for PSU students)
  • Great effort in terms of learning
  • Ability to use Media Tech equipment or higher grade
Responsibilities
  • Be present at weekly meetings
  • Develop at least two pieces a semester
  • Learning editing software (Adobe Premiere and After Effects)
  • Be constructive during pitches and critiques

BUSINESS DIVISION

Our business division is broken up into Advertising (Ad Sales), Casting, Events, Finance and Public Relations.

Advertising

VALLEY Magazine’s Advertising team’s role is to obtain funds for the magazine by reaching out to and maintaining communication with local businesses in State College, school organizations, online businesses, and Instagram boutiques/small businesses and secure advertisements. We also look for and reach out to students who are brand ambassadors/representatives of bigger corporations in hopes of obtaining PR samples that will be given to VALLEY members at the end-of-the-semester launch party. The advertising committee will also work closely with the creative division to create the Media Kit.

  • Attend all VALLEY promotional events
Events

The Events division is designed to promote VALLEY Magazine and increase readership and engagement. Events is responsible for executing at least 2-3 events, in person or online, to help promote VALLEY throughout the entirety of a semester. The events will include Launch Party, as well as other promotional events. Members will be responsible for reaching out to venues and local businesses and coordinating details for VALLEY events. Members will additionally be responsible for planning events and reaching out to people for collaborations with events.

  • Planning events – includes contacting venues, local businesses, and planning all logistics, etc. 
  • Purchasing supplies
  • Setting up/tearing down events – staff members must attend ALL events
Finance

The Finance Division of VALLEY Magazine is responsible for coordinating all fundraising events throughout the semester. Members are responsible for planning fundraising events as well as coordinating restaurant fundraisers throughout the semester.

Public Relations

The PR Division of VALLEY Magazine is responsible for upholding our brand image through social media, strategic partnerships and communication across divisions. The content produced by the PR team is one of VALLEY’s largest drivers of readership for the online web articles and the print magazine itself. The PR team is also the first point-of-reference for potential brand collaborations and fundraisers.

  • 24/7 administration over a social media account
  • Brainstorm and create promotional content to reach current and new audiences 
Casting Team

VALLEY Magazine’s Casting team is responsible for recruiting and selecting models and brand ambassadors to be featured in our print issue of the magazine and on our social media pages. The Casting team plans and hosts one model call per semester and works closely with the Editorial division, Creative division and Public Relations division to coordinate models for shoots.

Responsibilities
  • Attend weekly meetings for assigned division and general business meetings
  • Host one model call per semester and coordinate models with Creative division and PR team for any planned photo or video shoots
  • Develop a model database and portfolio
  • Promote model and ambassador diversity throughout all VALLEY content
  • Attend any photo or video shoots to assist with models and styling

WHAT IS EXPECTED OF ALL VALLEY MAGAZINE STAFF MEMBERS
  • Attend weekly Monday night meetings — Editorial and Business at 8 p.m.
  • Attend, participate and contribute to all VALLEY Magazine events.
  • Agree to not write or work for other publications specific to our campus. This includes The Daily Collegian, Onward State, HerCampus, The Odyssey Online and Spoon University (PSU).
  • Agree to commit to our staff for the entire semester.
