EDITORIAL DIVISION

Our editorial division consists of all print/web writers and web developers for VALLEY Magazine.

Each of the subdivisions has its own separate application, all of which can be found below. You may be called for an interview with your prospective director.

Writers

No prior journalism experience is required! All prospective writers will join our staff first as web writers, responsible for contributing at minimum one article per week to our website. After one semester on staff, you will then be eligible to write for our biannually published print magazine.

Admittance into our writing staff is based on a combined application/audition/interview process. The application is now open!

Web Developer

The Web Developer for VALLEY Magazine will be responsible for keeping the website up-to-date with innovative, interactive features. Applicants should have a background knowledge in information sciences and technology. They will work closely with the web director as well as with other directors to improve the website throughout the semester.

Qualifications
  • Coding

  • Knowledge of WordPress
  • App development
Responsibilities
  • Learning the ins and outs of WordPress
  • Work with other team members to field directors’ requests
  • Take the lead on ideas to further improve the website

CREATIVE DIVISION

Our creative division is broken up into Graphic Design, Photography and Video.

Each of the three subdivisions has its own separate application, all of which can be found below. You may be called for an interview with your prospective director.

Creative Directors

The creative director positions for VALLEY Magazine are responsible for overseeing and leading their individual creative teams and shaping the visual identity of the brand. The available positions for creative director are fashion director, design director, and photo director.

Fashion Director

Qualifications
  • Must have relevant styling experience or proof of skills
  • Be great online/thrift shopper
  • Be an expert at tag-tucking
  • Professional communication skills via email when communicating with stylists, models, and talent
Responsibilities
  • Working with Creative Director on the fashion and styling for the Beauty + Health, Fashion, and Cover Star shoots
  • Maintain a list of clothing/brand on each model to be captioned + credited in the print magazine
  • Maintain contact with models to release photos to them and tag them on VALLEY’s social media
  • Working with the Creative Director and the rest of Creative Team on the overall concept and vision for each print magazine
Photo Director

Qualifications
  • Must be proficient and have experience with professional studio lighting
  • Have access to a digital camera
  • Must be proficient in Adobe Photoshop, Lightroom and Bridge (more Adobe experience is a plus but is not required)
  • Has taken PHOTO 303 or higher level studio class
  • Must have access to the Photo Studio in Borland 020 and/or Room 019 in Borland Building
Responsibilities
  • Hiring Photography Staff for 2020-21 academic year
  • Appointing 2 Assistant Photo Directors for the 2020-21 academic year from your Photo Staff
  • Photographing, oversseing, lighting and directing the Beauty + Health spreads, Cover Star shoot, Fashion section, Section Opener shoot and editorial articles
  • Be able to teach and assist photo staff with lighting
  • Working with the Creative Director and rest of Creative Team on the overall concept and vision for the Fall and Spring Issues
Design Director

Qualifications
  • Must be a fourth-year majoring in Graphic Design
  • Have layout and editorial experience
  • Have experience making creative and visually-engaging graphics
  • Must be proficient in Adobe Suite
Responsibilities
  • Hiring Juniot + Sophomore Designers
  • Designing and overseeing the layout of each print magazine
  • Working with Creative Director on maintaining and progressing VALLEY’s visual brand
  • Working with the Creative Diredctor and rest of Creative Team on the overall concept and vision for each print magazine
Design

The Design subdivision for VALLEY Magazine is responsible for visual identity of the brand across the website, print magazine and social media. Members will have the opportunity to create graphics for social media and the magazine. 

Qualifications
  • Working knowledge of Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator and/or InDesign
  • Ability to produce graphics with a few days turnaround
  • Ability to take constructive criticism from Design and Creative directors

Photo

The Photo subdivision for VALLEY Magazine is responsible for photographing original content for articles posted to our website as well as for articles in our print magazine. Admittance into our photography staff is based on a combined application and portfolio review process. Photo assignments can consist of commercial, advertisement, beauty/fashion and events around campus.

Qualifications
  • Must own or have access to a DSLR camera
  • Proficient experience with Photoshop or Lightroom
  • Good time-management skills
  • Respect for deadlines
Responsibilities
  • Attend weekly meetings
  • Shoot for our semesterly print editions
  • Submit photographs for 1-2 online articles per week
  • Shoot photos for social media
Video

The Video subdivision for VALLEY Magazine is responsible for creating compelling video content that aligns with VALLEY brand guidelines for our website. Members will have hands-on experience with pitching, videoing and editing.

Qualifications
  • Respect for deadlines
  • Great discussion and group work skills
  • Good time management skills
  • Must have Adobe Cloud (free for PSU students)
  • Great effort in terms of learning
  • Ability to use Media Tech equipment or higher grade
Responsibilities
  • Be present at weekly meetings
  • Develop at least two pieces a semester
  • Learning editing software (Adobe Premiere and After Effects)
  • Be constructive during pitches and critiques

BUSINESS DIVISION

Our business division is broken up into Advertising (Ad Sales), Events, Finance and Public Relations.

Each of the four subdivisions has its own separate application, all of which can be found below. You may be called for an interview with your prospective director.

Advertising

The Advertising subdivision for VALLEY Magazine is responsible for booking and developing print/online ads with local State College businesses, creating and updating media kits, and writing branded content articles. The Advertising division is also responsible for designing VALLEY merchandise.

  • Contacting clients each week in the State College area
  • Building relationships and keeping in contact with clients
  • Gathering details from clients and keeping on top of payments
  • Pushing for both print and online advertisements
  • Write branded content articles for clients
  • Brainstorm new ideas for on-campus advertising
  • Attend all VALLEY promotional events
Events

The Events subdivision for VALLEY Magazine is responsible for all promotional events, including our Launch Party and other seasonal events to promote editorial section openers, newsletter subscriptions and readership. The Events team works closely with the Public Relations subdivision to promote events on all social media platforms. 

Qualifications
  • Prior experience with event-planning is a plus but not required
  • Good time-management skills
  • Respect for deadlines
  • Attention to detail
  • Organized

  • Strong communication and teamwork skills
  • Experience in graphic design is a plus but not required
Responsibilities
  • Attend weekly meetings
  • Planning events – includes contacting venues, local businesses, and planning all logistics, etc. 
  • Purchasing supplies
  • Setting up/tearing down events – staff members must attend ALL events
Finance

The Finance subdivision for VALLEY Magazine is responsible for developing fundraisers and creating new ways to draw in revenues. We are seeking creative, driven and committed applicants to join the team. The Finance team works closely with the Events subdivision to manage funds generated by promotional events, and with the Advertising team to manage funds generated from advertisements.

Responsibilities
  • Attend weekly meetings
  • Brainstorm ways to generate revenue
  • Track attendance at fundraisers 
  • Manage staff dues and money raised from fundraising and promotional events 
  • Allocate organization funds to different divisions
  • Attend all VALLEY promotional events
Public Relations/Social Media

The Public Relations subdivision for VALLEY Magazine is responsible for outreach to various businesses and organizations throughout the year. Members will also have the opportunity to work on various promotional efforts and VALLEY’s social media.

Qualifications
  • Familiarity with drafting/writing pitches
  • Outgoing personality
  • Working knowledge of Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, YouTube
  • Ability to comply with brand guidelines
  • Creative-minded
  • Experience in graphic design or photography is a plus but not required
Responsibilities
  • Attend weekly meetings
  • Writing press releases
  • Conducting outreach
  • Booking on-campus promotions
  • Create strategies and promotions to better the reach of VALLEY
  • Stay up to date with current events and social media trends
  • 24/7 administration over a social media account
  • Brainstorm and create promotional content to reach current and new audiences 

WHAT IS EXPECTED OF ALL VALLEY MAGAZINE STAFF MEMBERS
  • Attend weekly Monday night meetings — Editorial and Business at 8 p.m.
  • Attend, participate and contribute to all VALLEY Magazine events.
  • Agree to not write or work for other publications specific to our campus. This includes The Daily Collegian, Onward State, HerCampus, The Odyssey Online and Spoon University (PSU).
  • Agree to commit to our staff for the entire semester.
