The Euphoria Effect

If you haven’t already binge-watched HBO’s hit drama Euphoria, let us introduce you to your new favorite series. The show follows a twisted high school crowd who in addition to the usual struggles of high school have to battle their way through issues with identity, abuse, drugs and alcohol. Shining through the dark events that occur on the show however are the artfully over-the-top makeup looks that define each girl on the show.

This series has made such an impact that these makeup looks are being recreated by your favorite beauty guru’s. It has since been spotted on the runway, and as of recently, has even become a viral TikTok trend.

Makeup brands are even following suit in this trend and creating more colorful eyeshadow palettes, liners and highlights.

The protagonists, Rue Bennett, (Zendaya), Jules Vaughn (Hunter Schafer), Maddy Perez (Alexa Demie), Kat Hernandez (Barbie Ferreira), Cassie Howard (Sydney Sweeney), aren’t just known for their acting skills. Each of these characters expresses themselves differently through their bold makeup looks. Rue loves wearing gold glittery tears, Kat has her daring eyeliner, and if you’ve watched the show, you know how much Maddy loves rhinestones.

Euphoria makeup artist Doniella Davy is responsible for these iconic beauty looks. While she makes them look easy, recreating these types of looks can be difficult if you’re a beginner or aren’t entirely comfortable wearing a full face of gems and glitter yet.

Here’s VALLEY’s beginner’s guide to making Euphoria inspired looks of your own.

Start Small

One of the smallest changes you can make in your daily beauty routine is switching out your normal color palette with something more vibrant.

Instead of reaching for your everyday black eyeliner, try using a pastel color like blue or purple to create your wing. If you’re feeling extra adventurous, you can add a bright liner on top of your pastel shadow like Maddy did in this episode of Euphoria.

Don’t panic if you don’t get your wing right first try. Use a q-tip to fix any mistakes and when you’re finished, drag it along the edge of your wing to make sure it’s super sharp.

Grab your Glitter

Glitter is one of the most prominent aspects of the cast’s makeup looks and even a small touch of glitter can change up your whole look. If you are not comfortable with adding a lot of glitter yet, start small.

There are so many different ways you can add glitter into your makeup. You can pop it on your lid, your cheeks and even on your lips. One of the most subtle and effective ways to add glitter when you’re first starting your Euphoria makeup journey is by using a shimmery shadow to your eyeshadow look or even adding it to your inner corner.

Davy nailed this eyeshadow look for Maddy (Alexa Demie) and made recreating it totally doable.

Rhinestones Are Everything

Adding rhinestones or gems can seem super intimidating, but Euphoria has shown us that it can be done without looking like it is part of a costume. Jules (Hunter Schafer) did it best by doing a simple pink shadow look and adding a single gem to the outer corner of her eyes.

In the show, Davy usually gave the characters a more natural-looking face while experimenting with different eye looks to really make that the focal point of the makeup. Balance is really everything, so if you’re going for a bold lip, try a more natural eye look and vise-versa. This method can really help tone-down everything and make you feel more comfortable wearing rhinestones out in public.

Products to Use

Now that you’ve got the inspiration, here are some product recommendations if you don’t have the resources with you at Penn State.

Onset, Davy used Colourpop eyeshadow palettes, Suva Beauty Hydra LinersStila Shimmer and Glow Liquid EyeshadowsLemonhead glitter gels, and rhinestones from Amazon to create the looks in the series.

Skincare is also a big part of these makeup looks and Davy raves about Glow Recipe’s Pineapple-C Brightening Serum ($49) and Herbivore’s PRISM 20% AHA + 5% BHA Exfoliating Glow Facial ($58), but they can get a bit pricey.

Try Glossier’s Super Glow ($28) and The Ordinary’s AHA 30% + BHA 2% Peeling Solution as dupes to help you get the best base for your new and improved makeup routine.

In Euphoria and in real life, it is great to see that people are breaking the boundaries of beauty and trying out new trends that enhance their own natural personalities and identities just like the characters on the show.
