Freezing cold temperatures, tens of millions of viewers and one huge, shiny ball: these three unlikely components make up one of the year’s most anticipated performances. As 2019 begins, VALLEY is taking a look back and counting down some of the most iconic New Year’s Eve performances in recent history.

5. Jennifer Lopez (2017)

J. Lo’s energy during this performance had the power to make even those watching through the TV feel like they were right there in the live audience. Although she was on stage for less than 10 minutes, it seemed to be more of a concert than just a typical New Year’s Eve performance. A ton of sparkles, background dancers and one perfectly over-the-top feather cape made this Las Vegas performance one for the books.

4. Taylor Swift (2014)

Wearing a glittering blazer and opening with her hit “Welcome to New York,” Swift’s performance absolutely screamed “New Year’s Eve.” Swift followed this first song with her universal feel-good anthem “Shake It Off.” This performance was sure to put smiles on faces of all ages, whether viewing from their couch or from Times Square itself.

3. Justin Bieber (2011)

Known at the time for his catchy pop tunes about girls, Justin Bieber surprised the crowd by playing a beautiful rendition of “Let It Be” live on the piano. This song set the perfect tone for ringing in a new year and saying goodbye to the past. Even those who aren’t the biggest Beliebers had to give props to Bieber’s song choice, piano playing and performance.

2. Lady Gaga and Tony Bennett (2015)

Although she must have been a bit cold in her sleeveless dress and quirky headpiece, Lady Gaga’s vocals were undeniably happy and uplifting. The pairing of her voice with the iconic Tony Bennett and some jazzy piano music brought to life the feeling of New Year’s Eve in New York City.

1.Britney Spears (2018)

Britney’s presence on stage is one that is hard to match. Mixing her classic pop hit “Toxic” with her one of her more recent songs, “Work B**ch,” she appealed to generations of viewers. From her dance moves, to her outfit change, to her always sassy facial expressions, Britney’s full blown New Year’s Eve show was certainly unforgettable.

2019 is sure to bring us more unforgettable moments and performances, and we can’t wait to see what else is in store.
