At this point, we’ve all read the GQ article about Megan Fox and Machine Gun Kelly — or seen the videos, or scrolled past the Instagram posts or laughed at the tweets detailing the cringe-inducing exchange (if not, you can check it out here). Social media was quick to troll the internet’s current it-couple, and in the process, it made some pretty solid points about the dynamic of their relationship.

In a recent Washington Post article, the nail was hit on the head when MGK and Megan weren’t being praised or admired, but instead called “cringe-worthy.” In what seemed to be the first piece of journalism criticizing the seemingly beloved couple, this came as a shock to many but may actually make more sense than we might realize.

In a recent Instagram caption promoting the GQ interview, Fox listed what seemed to be highlights or recurring themes in her relationship with MGK, including guns, addiction, “lots of blood,” “general mayhem” and “tantric night terrors.” Yet again, the internet was quick with the jokes on this one, but this isn’t necessarily a laughing matter.

In the midst of this GQ interview, Machine Gun Kelly and Megan Fox are tattooing one another — the words “the darkest fairytale” are now permanently etched onto both of their bodies. As exciting or glamorous as that may sound, can that really be entirely healthy? On the phrase inked onto her skin, Fox said “it’s ecstasy and agony for sure … I don’t want people to think anything’s perfect with us. I didn’t say it was the darkest fairy tale for no reason. There’s also the demonic side.”

In a day and age where healthy relationships and prioritizing one’s mental health are more encouraged than ever, it’s odd that so many people are so fascinated by this particular couple’s dynamic. We’re seeing only a very small portion of this relationship, and what has recently been revealed to the world does not sound exactly healthy. While no relationship is perfect, this one has left people with a lot of questions. What exactly does the “demonic” side of this relationship entail? Why does their relationship include lots of blood and guns?

Consider this: if this was a couple you knew in real life who weren’t massive celebrities, would you still be interested in them? If they weren’t both incredibly wealthy, good-looking and successful in their respective fields, would we still be fascinated by them? Or would we think something was a little off?

Twitter users compared these statements to “bands kids in their first relationship” or “the couple who got married right out of high school” — meaning that if these were two regular people with average lives, we wouldn’t be idolizing this relationship, but rather questioning it. The choice to write out that their relationship features feverish obsession, guns and addiction under a photo where both of them look stunning almost glamorizes these things instead of calling into question the very reason these things are involved in the first place.

As fun as it can be to keep up with your fav celebs and their relationships, it’s important to step back and remember that they are also just people. We don’t know the ins and outs of their relationship, so keep in mind that while it may look like a whirlwind romance, we shouldn’t be putting any relationship entailing addiction, blood, guns or night terrors on a pedestal. While you can still support your favorite ghostly couple, try to be mindful of how you perceive their relationship.
