Giving Thanks This Thanksgiving

Turkey and mashed potatoes are in sight as this break from classes sends us back home to be with our family. However, Thanksgiving is much more than eating and dressing up to hang out in your own house. This is the season to start thinking about all the positive people in your life and reach out to them to give them a thank you for being a great influence in your life.

Whether it be as simple as helping with your homework to getting you through a tough time, gratitude can go a long way to make someone’s day. It’s a nice gesture, of course, but why do we do it? When we look at our lives as a whole, gratitude encourages us to recognize the goodness of others. This practice can strengthen relationships by acknowledging those loved ones who make an impact on you. You would never want to regret not telling someone that they were appreciated, so saying thank you is another way to remind people that their efforts don’t go unnoticed.

There are tons of ways that you can give your thanks. Reflect on this year and acknowledge who really stands out to you. The little things go a long way, and the simplest of gestures can turn someone’s day completely around.

Write a Card or Send a Message

What’s more personal than a handwritten note? If you aren’t one to talk about your feelings, writing a note for someone is a great way to get out all your emotions. It is a keepsake that they will probably keep for a long time. Once it is on paper, it is permanent, so this personalized method comes straight from the heart to the pen. We do, however, live in a world of convenience, so if you’d prefer to shoot them a text with all your thoughts, you can do that, too! But taking the extra effort to write a letter can make a big difference.

Spend Time With The People That Matter

Simply giving your time to be with people can mean so much while doing so little. Catch up with family this break and create little memories that may not be remembered, but are always appreciated. Sometimes we take for granted moments like these where we can just sit around and talk about everything. Even offer to do something that they enjoy of that you know they would like. Make yourself present in that moment — try to disconnect yourself from technology.

Even if you are not having Thanksgiving dinner with your loved ones, make an effort to go out with them or to visit them.

Give Back

Don’t go overboard with presents just yet because it is already November so the holidays will sneak up on you quickly. However, if you can’t quite put in to words how you feel, small gifts can bring so much joy. Little treats or surprises can be your way of showing them that you recognize what they have done for you.

Some examples of fun and thoughtful gifts include:

  • Their favorite candy
  • Something personalized like mugs, jewelry or a signed card
  • Baked goods
  • A gift card to their favorite restaurant

Money can never show what words or physical interaction can, but it is a start.

Take the time to reflect on your loved ones this holiday break and appreciate all those who have helped you, loved you and been with you.
