Brooke Martinez: Behind the Scenes of a P.S.YouTuber

Posted by @brookemartinez on Instagram

With 220 subscribers on her YouTube channel, Brooke Martinez is following her passion for beauty and fashion. She is a senior at Penn State, and along with being a student, she loves to put her energy into her channel. Getting content out and growing her channel to inspire as many people as possible is her goal. Her channel focus is beauty, lifestyle and college-style videos. She ultimately wants to inspire others to be their true selves as well as share information and spread kindness. VALLEY sat down with her to ask her a few questions about herself and her channel!

VALLEY: When did you start posting on YouTube and how did you get into it?

Brooke Martinez: I started posting on YouTube almost a year ago. I can’t believe it has almost been a year already! My friends had always encouraged me to start [a YouTube channel] since I love fashion, skincare and makeup so much. but I was definitely nervous. I love watching YouTube and was definitely into the idea of having a channel. My channel is definitely not where I want it to be yet, as I find it difficult to balance making videos with my extremely busy life as a student — but I am feeling inspired recently and will be making more videos very soon.

V: How would you describe your own personal style?

BM: Describing my style is hard; I love to wear basics and spice up my outfits with accessories, like hats, belts, any type of jewelry, bandanas, etc. I am a huge accessory girl. I wear anything from grungy to sporty to girly. My style is not limited and I am definitely open to trying out different types of styles. I definitely do not have a lot of color in my wardrobe. I wear mostly neutrals but I do love red and yellow, as well.

V: Who or what inspired you to do what you’re doing now?

BM: I was extremely inspired by Carli Bybel, who is a beauty guru on YouTube. She is definitely a lot more talented than I am, but I really can relate to her. Aside from makeup, we have a lot in common. She is an animal lover and is from New Jersey (same as me), she also has the best personality. I was also inspired by Keaton Milburn, who is a college student and a YouTuber. I strive to balance school and YouTube like she does and she has AMAZING style.

V: How do you manage posting on YouTube while attending college?

BM: I have yet to find out how to do this. I am currently taking five classes, serving on the Panhellenic Executive Board as vice president for membership — which means I am planning Primary Recruitment — and am starting an internship with Nittany Co-Op next week. I am also an active member in Kappa Delta sorority. I think I am going to have to just find the time during the evenings or early mornings to film, or start making more vlog-style college videos!

V: What’s next for you after college?

BM: I am currently a senior in college majoring in journalism and minoring in digital media trends and analytics. After I graduate, I would love to focus on YouTube for a while. I would also love to write for a lifestyle magazine. Over the summer, I interned with CBD For Life, a skincare and wellness company. I would also love to work for them full-time. As for now, I am enjoying my senior year and making every single minute count!

V: What advice would you give someone who wants to start a channel?

BM: I would encourage them to dive right into making videos. The only [person whose] opinion matters is your own and that you are happy with the content you are creating. Do it because you love it, not for the subscribers. My channel is still small. I only have 220 subscribers, and that is fine! I obviously would love to gain more, and I am sure that I will be able to once I am able to dedicate more time to my channel. I am thankful for anyone who takes their time out to watch my videos, whether it be two people or 2,000.

V: Who are your top five YouTubers to follow?

BM:

  1. I have to shout out one of my friends and fellow YouTuber, Carly Fizzano. She is a sophomore at Penn State and is also in Greek life! We met through YouTube and we are actually working on a collaboration Room Tour video this weekend! Everyone should check out her channel!
  1. As I mentioned before, Carli Bybel
  2. Keaton Milburn (College lifestyle YouTuber)
  3. James Charles (Beauty Guru)
  4. Jaclyn Hill (Beauty Guru)

I love them so so much and these are just my favorites in regard to beauty and lifestyle. I also really like Emma Chamberlain, Shane Dawson, Jeffree Star, the Dolan Twins and Danielle Carolan.

V: What is one makeup product you could not live without?

BM: This is definitely a hard one. I have to think about this but if I had to choose, I would choose false lashes. Having lashes makes me feel way more confident with myself. My favorites are Christina Lashes in the style #43!
