This Friday, American R&B singer-songwriter Tinashe performed at Alumni Hall at the HUB.
The sultry singer rose to fame with breakout hit and collab “2 On” featuring Schoolboy Q in 2014. Since then, she has collaborated with other famous artists, including Blackbear, Ty Dolla $ign, Kid Ink and Chance The Rapper and is rumored to have recently spent time in the studio with Drake.
Her smash hit song, “All My Friends,” featuring Chance the Rapper and Snakehips shot to the top of the Billboard charts in five countries and would go on to win the Ivor Novello award for “Best Contemporary Song.”
Serving as the opening act for both Nicki Minaj, Katy Perry and Maroon 5 and appearing on Rent: Live on FOX a few weeks ago, the girl is nothing short of talented.
The show started at 9:45, about two hours late due to her canceled flight out of Philly. The lights dimmed as all attention was focused on her amazingly talented drummer, Toni Richardson, as he killed his drum solo. Shortly after, Tinashe’s two backup dancers strutted on the stage, both wearing loose black cargo pants tied with a white belt and paired with black crop tops.
Tinashe took the stage rocking the athleisure look, wearing a black and neon green tracksuit with a sports bra underneath, her curly hair tied in two adorable space buns.
Not long after she wrapped up her first song, the crowd erupted in unison as they sang “Happy Birthday” to her, since her birthday was the day before the concert. One dedicated fan even passed up a bouquet of red roses to her, to which she happily accepted and handed to one of her managers.
“So, Valentine’s Day is coming up soon…” she said playfully as she looked out into the audience. She reassured the crowd that she is Valentine-less this year (as compared to last year when she was dating 76ers star Ben Simmons.) The blue and green lights dimmed even more as song “Ooh La La” was cued.
Tinashe showcased her powerhouse vocals with every single song, hitting every single note and riff with utter ease.
“Who wants to come up on stage?” she asked the audience, to which of course they went nuts. One lucky student named Gabe was selected to come up on stage as Tinashe and both of her backup dancers gave him the lap dance of his life to the seductive song “Company.” Red faced and smiling ear to ear, Gabe shyly walked off the stage after the song was over. “Give it up for Gabe!” she said.
Next up was hit song “All My Friends,” clearly one of her most popular songs given the reaction of the audience as they sang along to every single word. Following that was a dance break, or should we say twerk break to Drake’s “God’s Plan” and a stunning cover of TLC’s “No Scrubs.”
Closing out the show, she performed two of her hit songs “All Hands on Deck” and “2 On” before thanking the crowd and exiting the stage.
