Escaping Apartment Fever

Being a Penn State student comes with its share of snowy apartment- or dorm-bound days. We all know the struggle of feeling like a hermit in our own living space, surrounded by textbooks, empty snack wrappers and questionable laundry piles that seem to have developed a life of their own, but there’s a whole world beyond those four walls waiting to be discovered. If you’re tired of the same old routine and are ready to spice it up, it’s time to break free from your apartment bubble and embrace the adventures that await in Happy Valley. VALLEY is here to let you in on all the State College hidden gems once you’ve explored all campus and E. College Ave has to offer!

Let’s start with those moments when procrastination kicks in. Instead of mindlessly scrolling through your phone, why not take a break and explore the beauty of the Arboretum? A leisurely stroll among the trees can do wonders for your mood and productivity. And if you’re up for a little friendly competition, grab a frisbee and head to one of the nearby frisbee golf courses for a fun outdoor activity. Even if this doesn’t sound like your type of thing, some fresh air will do good for your mind and have you ready to tackle your next assignment once you get back.

When it comes to satisfying your hunger cravings, downtown State College has ample fast-food options we’ve all indulged in on multiple occasions. But for some reason, it doesn’t hit the same in the daylight. Forget about your usual microwave meals or go to DoorDash order and treat yourself to some local delights. Whether you’re in the mood for some classic Italian from Bonfattos or a cafe treat from Cafe Lemont, you’ll find plenty of delicious options just beyond our Penn State bubble.

But exploring Happy Valley isn’t just about food and outdoor activities – it’s also about immersing yourself in the culture. Take a break from being just a student and be a local! You can take advantage of the numerous cultural events happening on campus, from performances at the Center for the Performing Arts to exhibitions at the Palmer Museum of Art. But if you’re more in the mood for a comfy experience, check out the multiple movie theaters within a 15-minute drive of campus. Your new favorite movie and a bucket of popcorn are waiting for you at the College 9 theater!
