The Met Gala is an eagerly awaited annual event in the fashion world. Celebrities gather at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and dress to a theme in order to raise funds for the museum’s Costume Institute. This year, the theme was “Camp: Notes on Fashion.” Camp fashion is described as exaggerated and flamboyant, and the celebrities definitely delivered on this topic.
Here are some suggestions on how you can imitate your favorite celebrities’ looks without breaking the bank.
Lili Reinhart
Lili Reinhart looked stunning in a billowing romper with a train that could not be ignored. The over-the-top makeup and hair details really bring this camp look home. If you love this outfit but feel like it may be a little too much for an everyday outing, try the Feeling The Night Romper In Island Blue ($48.90) from Lucy in the Sky. It incorporates the pale blue and flowing nature of Reinhart’s looks without being too overbearing. Top that off with a bold pink eyeshadow, such as Primal Colors in Pink ($5) from NYX and a chunky silver heel like the Jody Sandal ($44.99) from DSW, and you have a look that could slay the runway or the school day.
Kylie Jenner
The Jenner sisters always bring their A game to the red carpet, and this year’s Met Gala was no different. Kylie’s outfit consisted of a chainmail-style bodycon dress with large feather accents. To recreate this look, VALLEY suggests a lilac bodycon dress such as the Jenny Square Neck Dress ($66) from REVOLVE and silver fishnet tights like the Women’s Micro Net Tights ($15.40) from Macy’s to imitate the decorative link design of Jenner’s dress. To get the look of her iconic fluffy accents, VALLEY recommends a fur clutch in order to emulate the look without overdoing it. The clutch pictured above is the Pearl Decoration Solid Color Plush Clutch ($39.97) from TBDRESS. With this look, you’ll make a bigger statement than Jenner’s lips.
Lady Gaga
This year, Lady Gaga co-chaired the Met Gala and set a new standard for red carpet entrances. She choreographed not one but three outfit changes during her entrance, and her every move was very deliberate and purposeful. She went from wearing a huge, hot pink coat and Sia-style bow to wearing nothing but her underwear, heels and fishnets. Only Gaga could pull off such an elaborate stunt, however, you can achieve the same fabulousness in a more toned down way by wearing a headwrap, like the Wide Front Twist Headwrap ($4.90) from Forever 21, instead of a larger-than-life bow. VALLEY also recommends the more casual version of Gaga’s coat to make a statement without going over the top — try the Slinky Plain Long Length Duster ($32) from boohoo. Top that off with individual lash extensions, such as Faux Mink Individual Lashes ($9.99) from ULTA, and you’ll look fresh out of the gala afterparty!
Harry Styles
Harry Styles’ outfit was subtly beautiful with a unique, sheer top and heeled boots. His rings added a touch of glam to the all black ensemble. For a similar look, VALLEY suggests the Chunky Ring Pack ($29) from ASOS. For a more casual version of Styles’ sheer top, try this Sheer Mesh Jacket ($22.90) from Forever 21. It has the same uniqueness to it that Styles’ does, without the hefty price tag and daunting formality. His shoes, while wonderful, do not look too comfortable. For a laid-back option, VALLEY suggests the Ben Sherman Gaston Chelsea Boots ($66) from Zappos! to make you look and feel like a streetwear model.
