2020 has been a bad year, but it isn’t over yet and keeps getting worse. At the end of the year, Netflix is saying goodbye to many iconic shows and movies. The following shows are leaving throughout the month of December, so hurry and binge them for the first or last time. Here is a brief list of some of the heartbreaking goodbyes, and where you can watch them once they are off Netflix.
The Office: Seasons 1-9
Gossip Girl: Seasons 1-6
Dexter: Seasons 1-8
The West Wing: Seasons 1-7
This is a VERY shortlist, as there are so many titles leaving. Click here to view a full list.
There is much speculation about why Netflix removes popular shows. They often remove titles each month without any warning.
According to Netflix, “Netflix licenses TV shows and movies from studios and content providers around the world, and those licenses can expire if we don’t renew them. Though we strive to keep the content you want to see, we acquire licensing rights for TV shows and movies for a certain period of time – not indefinitely – so some titles do leave Netflix. If a TV show or movie you love is leaving, it indicates that our licensing agreement with the content provider is about to end.”
They also consider the following when deciding whether to keep a series or movie.
- Are the rights to the title still available?
- How popular is it, and how much does it cost?
- Seasonal and regional factors
Many think that the streaming platform wants to transition into only having Netflix originals and slowly get rid of other shows that aren’t theirs. Throughout the past couple of years, many networks have started their own streaming services to compete with Netflix. It is also possible that these networks are taking away the rights to their shows so that they can be the primary network showing the series or movie.
Although it’s a sad end of the year for many, hopefully, you will be able to continue to watch your favorite shows and movies on an alternate streaming service and, if not, Netflix is always creating and adding new shows!
