#WCW: Amy Schumer

Amy Schumer is a hot mess. Or at least she plays one in her new movie, Trainwreck. Even though she may not make the best decisions, what we love about her is that she stays true to herself—flaws and all. That’s why she’s snagged a spot as Valley’s #WomanCrushWednesday this week.

In her new movie, which she wrote and also stars in, she plays a young woman with an awesome job, amazing apartment and appalling love life. As the champion of one night stands, she cycles through countless hookups in an effort to avoid true love and heartbreak. When she inevitably encounters a man who makes her reconsider her ways, all hell breaks loose; hence the title, Trainwreck.

Watching Amy stumble through the shambles of her life is as poignant as it is hilarious. Throw in a serious family tragedy, and this movie will have you laughing and crying until the very end.

That is the magic of Amy Schumer. She is a talented writer, actor and comedian who knows how to be bad ass and hilarious and at the same time completely vulnerable. And not just as a performer. In interviews like this one, she has admitted that much of the movie is based on real life experiences. She’s not afraid to make herself the punchline of the joke.

In addition to her new movie, she is also the creator, star and executive producer of an Emmy-nominated show on Comedy Central called Inside Amy Schumer. Her content is frequently explicit and borderline offensive, but at the same time super relatable. Everyone has dirty thoughts, she just has the balls to say them out loud. Case in point, “my comedy is unapologetic and fearless. Like, sometimes you’ll wind up having condomless sex with someone that you probably shouldn’t. I’m interested in sharing that part of myself unapologetically so that other people will hopefully feel better.”

And no matter how raunchy she gets, her comedy does make you feel better. Her humor is refreshing because she gets it. Today’s hook up culture and dating rituals are weird. Finding love and loving yourself is more confusing than ever. Amy Schumer gets right to the heart of society’s issues, and hearing about her own hilarious struggles makes you realize it’s okay to be a messy human being too.

As her fame keeps growing, she faces more and more obstacles and criticism, but she never lets anyone hold her flaws against her. For example, when an Australian reporter tried to say that her character in Trainwreck was “skanky” for having sex with a lot of guys, she immediately shut him down in the best way possible. For all the times that she has laughed at herself, she never tears herself down.

Basically Amy Schumer is a boss. She runs her own show, she doesn’t settle for anything less than she deserves and her accomplishments are fueled by her amazing self confidence. She says it best herself, “I will speak and share and f*ck and love and I will never apologize to the frightened millions who resent that they never had it in them to do it. I stand here and I am amazing, for you. Not because of you. I am not who I sleep with. I am not my weight. I am not my mother. I am myself. And I am all of you, and I thank you.”

Thank you Amy Schumer for being brave enough to say the things you do and being brilliant enough to say them in a way that makes us laugh until we cry.
