The annual Met Gala will return on May 6, 2024, at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. It will celebrate the theme, “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion.” VALLEY will be breaking down what to expect and a glimpse of the past met galas.
What is the Met Gala?
The Met Costume Institute Gala, also known as the Met Gala is an annual fundraising event for the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The event is an ode to haute couture. You can expect to see an exclusive guest list, striking outfits and an eye-catching theme.
What is the theme?
The 2024 theme will celebrate “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion,” which will honor pieces by Hubert de Givenchy, Elsa Schiaparelli, Christian Dio, Yves Saint Laurent and more. Additionally, a costume exhibit in the museum will be on display for the season.
According to Vogue, Andrew Bolton, Wendy Yu Curator in Charge of the Costume Institute, the exhibit will be an ode to the natural world, taking inspiration from the land, sea and sky.
Predictions for 2024
The Met Gala is hosted by Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour and her chosen co-hosts. Last year, Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty was hosted by Michaela Coel, Penelope Cruz, Roger Federer, and Dua Lipa. While the co-hosts have not been announced, it is anticipated that they will be some of your favorite idols.
Tickets have been estimated to be $30,000 and have risen to $50,000 in 2023. It is possible that ticket prices could increase. With the exhibit theme honoring nature and fashion history, we can expect to see different textures and designs inspired by iconic centuries.
Memorable looks of the past
The Met Gala dates back to 1971, where the event has grown to be considered one of the most prestigious fashion events in the world. The decades of the “Oscars of fashion” have taken inspiration from cultural influence to the Punk couture. Let’s take a look of our favorite past designs.
Blake Lively
Actress and businesswoman, Blake Lively has been referenced as the “Queen of the Met Gala.” She is known to match the theme and carpet every year. While she did not attend the event in 2023, her look from Versace paid tribute to the Statue of Liberty, commemorating the 2022 theme, “Gilded Glamour.” The copper and pink bedazzled dress unraveled into a green train, recognizing the monument’s color transition.
Rihanna
Rihanna wore an eye-catching cream bejeweled jacket and gown by Mason Margiela. The attire was topped off with the pope-inspired headpiece. As the mogul is known to go above and beyond at the Met Gala, we’re excited to see what she’ll wear in 2024.
Cardi B
Camp: Notes in Fashion was a nod to writer Susan Sontag who said that Camp is “love of the unnatural: of artifice and exaggeration.” Cardi B honored the 2019 theme with a red high-neck Moschino gown. Rubies and waves of 30,000 feathers encompassed the look.
