The Best Looks from the 2023 Oscars

Another awards season came to a close last Sunday with the 95th Annual Academy Awards. Held at the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles, California, the night came with record-setting award winners, emotional speeches and, of course, some beautiful outfits. The champagne carpet — a change from the typical red — was packed with some of the biggest stars from the film industry all dressed to impress.

While the 2023 Oscars celebrated the best film performances of the year, the red carpet beforehand saw the stars pull out all the stops to deliver their best fashion performances of the year as well. Color was a hit of the night, and as the nominees and their guests arrived, so did every color imaginable. The result was a great mix of bright colors, fun prints and some good old-fashioned suits.

Lady Gaga’s look was a true runway-to-red carpet design, as Gigi Hadid had modeled the sheer black Versace gown at the brand’s fashion show only days before the Oscars. The singer stunned in the sheer drop-waist gown with exposed boning and a drop skirt at the bottom. The Oscar nominee for Best Original Song (for “Top Gun: Maverick’s” Hold My Hand) kept it relatively simple for jewelry, with only silver stud earrings and a shimmering choker that matched the iconic Medusa medallion at the dresses waist.

While the Irish actor may have lost out on Best Actor, he got some nods for his fantastic style on the Oscars carpet. Wearing a custom Gucci tuxedo, Paul Mescal brought some color with an ivory tuxedo jacket featuring a red silk corsage and a black bow tie. His stylist paired the double-breasted satin jacket with a translucent silk shirt and wool kick-flare trousers that give off an old Hollywood vibe. Mescal paired the look with several pieces of Cartier jewelry, including hoop earrings, a diamond floral brooch and an iconic Cartier Privé Tank Chinoise watch.

Everyone’s favorite queen of Wakanda showed up and showed out on the champagne carpet this year! The Best Supporting Actress nominee (nominated for her role in “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever”) arrived wearing a bright purple Moschino gown featuring a dramatic one-shoulder, plunging neckline and mermaid silhouette. She paired the look with stunning jewels, including a Bulgari diamond serpent necklace, diamond stud earrings and a glimmering bracelet. Bassett also carried a shimmery black circular bag that seemed to reflect off the lights of the carpet.

Another man bringing some color was Dwayne Johnson, who showed up wearing a satin suit from Dolce & Gabbana in a color he described as “ballet pink.” Johnson’s black trousers and black dress shoes contrasted the pink blazer, making the satin look stand out. The star did keep it classic, though, pairing a crisp white collared shirt under the jacket with a classic black bow tie. To bring in some more color, Johnson’s lapel also featured a pink flower that matched his suit jacket.

One of the big winners of the night — in both awards and fashion — was Michelle Yeoh. The Best Actress winner (for her role in “Everything Everywhere All at Once”) arrived wearing an angelic Dior Couture gown. The ethereal white a-line dress featured a sheer neckline and tulle train accentuated with delicate feathers. Yeoh paired the look with drop earrings and a jeweled headband — both glinting with diamonds from Moussaieff —and a Richard Mille watch.

The Best Supporting Actress nominee (who starred in “Everything Everywhere All at Once”) was another big color winner on the carpet when she arrived wearing a breathtaking strapless pink gown by Valentino. The pink number — from Valentino’s Spring 2023 couture collection — featured a structured bodice and a giant bubble hem that drew attention from everyone on the carpet. Hsu accessorized her outfit with silver drop earrings and a matching bracelet, allowing the dress to truly shine.

Austin Butler

A classic is a classic for a reason, which is why we all collectively swooned when Austin Butler hit the carpet at the Oscars this year. Butler arrived at the ceremony wearing a sharp black velvet tux by Saint Laurent. He went classic with his pairings, wearing a crisp white button-down underneath the velvet suit jacket and matching it with a classic black bow tie. Butler did bring some rock-n-roll into the look with his shoes and jewelry as he rocked pointy black patent boots with a block heel and Cartier jewelry.
