Super Sweet: The Swedish Candy Hype

There seems to be a new viral food craze that takes over the internet every few weeks, causing everyone to rush out and buy in a frenzy just to be included in the most current experience. This week’s craze: Swedish candy. We are not talking about the little red gummy fish candy that is already extremely popular in America, but gummy candy that originated in Sweden. TikTok’s FYP has been flooded with videos of content creators buying and taste-testing this seemingly normal candy, but for some reason, they are making it look like the best thing they ever tasted.

Bub’s, Sour Skulls, Fried Eggs

The most popular candies that people have been trying are Bub’s brand. The oval dual-flavored gummies come in a variety of color and flavor choices such as strawberry and pomegranate or raspberry and blueberry. They’re referred to as “foam candy” on Bub’s official website. The ovals have been receiving so much love because of their pillowy texture that people find satisfying to eat.

Another Bub’s fan favorite is the sour skulls. They are similar to the ovals in the sense that they are also dual-flavored, but they are more chewy with a sour and sugary coating. Those who tend to enjoy sour candy have also loved the skulls.

Gummies shaped into other foods are also very popular. The candy-fried egg has the same texture as the ovals on the “whites” and a more jelly-like center or “yolk.”

BonBon – A Swedish Candy Co.

The TikTok videos tend to start with showing a bubblegum pink bag with dark blue cursive writing on the front reading “BonBon – A Swedish Candy Co.” BonBon is a chain of stores located in New York City and also available to purchase online. The company’s website’s “about us” section reveals a little of the brand’s history and founding.

“The magical world of BonBon was founded in 2018 by friends Bobby, Leo and Selim to sweeten and revolutionize the US candy world; through a love for their homeland and its sweet and savory treats.”

As beautiful as BonBon’s selection and curated packages are, there is a controversy surrounding them. Their prices are relatively high for something as common as gummy candy. The top-selling “sweet mix” is $18 for one bag. Of course, the pricing does not stop influencers from buying it, but their comment sections are filled with quotes like “This would be less than a few dollars in Sweden” or “$20 for that?”

However, the website does reveal that all the candy they sell is imported directly from Sweden.

“We import all products ourselves from Sweden, this way we can always ensure quality and the highest standards as set by real-life Oompa Loompas on site in Sweden and New York.”

BonBon’s popularity has skyrocketed so much that orders online are currently back ordered by 3 weeks.

Candy Influencers?

Abigail Feehley, a beauty and lifestyle TikToker with over 150,000 followers first posted a video trying Swedish candy from BonBon in January. Since then, viewers have started begging for more and more candy content. Feehley has been sent multiple PR packages from other candy companies for her to try and review. The candy content has become a norm in what Abigail produces and she is now most known for eating candy on the internet rather than any of her beauty tips and tricks.
