The newest hair trend to hit the streets of Happy Valley is the increasingly popular sock bun. The Kardashian klan set off this trend of big circular buns sitting atop of the head, but is this a trend only the Hollywood rich and famous can pull off?
This DIY hairstyle is easy to do and only requires three items: one sock (preferably one that matches your hair color), scissors, and bobby pins. This hairstyle takes only a few quick steps to do.
First, cut the enclosed-toe area off of the sock, so the sock is now a cloth-tube. Next, put your hair into a high ponytail and tie with an elastic hairband. Take the loose end of your ponytail and wrap around the center of the sock. After that, begin to roll your sock and hair until you reach the base of the ponytail. Once you finish rolling, disperse your hair to cover spaces where the sock shows through. Finally, tuck away fly-away strands and use bobby pins to secure your sock bun underneath to the base of the ponytail, or to the elastic hairband. The end result will be a glamorous up do!
Health and human development junior Murphy Kane loves rocking the sock bun. “It keeps my hair off my face and it’s still fashionable.” However, not everyone feels the sock bun love that Kane does.
“I think it’s a fading trend and guys hate it,” says advertising and public relations junior Taylorann Miller. She says when she interned in New York this summer, she saw girls sporting the sock bun all the time and it looked very high fashion. “Now I see girls wearing it all the time around campus,” she says. “I just don’t think it’s for everyone, but that’s with every trend.”
Whether we like it or not, it looks like the sock bun is here to stay, at least for a little while. Who knows, what the next crazy clothing-item-made-beauty-accessory will be? Maybe next season UndeeBandz will come back…
Or, maybe not.
