As the sustainability movement has began to make a huge impact in the fashion industry, it’s no surprise that fashion subscription boxes have become increasingly popular. Of course, buying from sustainable brands is important to keep in mind when shopping, but nothing is more sustainable than renting pieces.

When evaluating which subscription service is right for you, we recommend browsing the clothing options on each subscription site. The more you are able to use the clothes you order, the more it’s actually worth your money. Renting clothes such as jeans and jackets is also an efficient way to test out certain styles, or follow trends, without having to actually purchase the items. A couple of these services are also offering deals for first time subscribers.

Nuuly

From the same company that brought us Urban Outfitters, Free People, and Anthropologie, comes an equally celebrated clothing subscription service. Each month, Nuuly allows subscribers to pick out six different pieces for $88, which includes free shipping and returns. The best part about it? Many of your favorite pieces from URBN brands such as Urban Outfitters and Free People are available on the site.

In addition to this incredible deal, Nuuly subscribers receive their clothes in a zip-up Nuuly bag, which they claim saves 40 cardboard boxes. The packaging is just another way that sustainability permeates every aspect of this brand.

Rent the Runway

Rent the Runway is a fashion subscription service that has been around for over ten years. Founded in 2009 by Jennifer Hyman and Jennifer Fleiss, Rent the Runway has allowed women to rent, return, or even keep and purchase the clothes they get from the company.

If you’re new to renting clothes, Rent the Runway offers three different plans that cater to different needs. The first plan offers four designer items for $94 per month, the second offers eight for $144, and the last offers 16 for $235. The first plan allows the subscriber to get $350 worth of clothing, while the other two allow the subscriber to rent up to $3000 in clothing as part of the package.

FashionPass

FashionPass was founded in 2016 by Brittany Johnson, and it is popular among social media influencers. The company, made up of mostly women, offers unlimited rentals with an extremely user-friendly site that helps customers select clothes for specific occassions. They also allow subscribers to chat with a stylist when selecting their items, which is unique to this service.

Similar to Rent the Runway, FashionPass offers three different plans. The first plan known as the “Socialite” offers subscribers two clothing items and one accessory for $79 a month. The second plan, named the “Trendsetter” provides subscribers with three clothing pieces and two accessories for $109 a month. “Wanderlust,” the most expensive plan, includes four clothing items and three accessories for $139 a month.

The next time you’re going to an event or on a vacation, trying out a fashion subscription box may not be a bad idea. Especially when it comes to pieces you may only wear a couple of times in your life, it’s a much more sustainable decision to rent rather than buy. If you try out one of these services, tweet us what you think at @VALLEYmag!
