Marsala: The Official Color of 2015

If you think of marsala only as an Italian chicken dish served at Olive Garden, you have a lot of catching up to do.

Marsala is actually an earthy brownish-red color that was just named the 2015 Pantone Color of the Year. Pantone calls marsala a “stirring and flavorful shade for apparel and accessories, one that encourages color creativity and experimentation.”

Plenty of celebrities such as Emma Stone, Mila Kunis and Miranda Kerr have already jumped on the trend, sporting marsala dresses on the red carpet. Even Blake Lively wore a marsala Gucci gown, and let’s face it; if Blake Lively wears marsala, you know you want to wear it, too.

We may not be able to buy Gucci dresses from stores here in State College, but just walking down College Ave., you can spot marsala-colored displays in the windows of Metro, Urban Outfitters and People’s Nation.

Metro has literally every article of clothing you could imagine in the red-wine hue. From marsala velvet high-rise shorts,  leather circle skirts and matching marsala leather crop tops, the trendy hue has officially arrived. They also have a long-sleeved marsala romper that would be ideal for a night out.

The color pairs well with any neutral color, especially navy and black.

I spoke with Emily Carson, a manager at Urban Outfitters, and she says Urban has been carrying a variety of marsala items lately. “It transitioned well into winter,” Carson says.

One of her favorite marsala pieces in the store is the Ecoté Piper Deep-V Tank Top. She recommends pairing the tank with high-rise black skinny jeans and a black bralette.

If you aren’t quite ready to commit to the marsala trend yet, People’s Nation has tons of smaller statement accessories to choose from. People’s Nation has marsala gloves and scarves you can wear with anything from a tan peacoat to a black parka. You can also find marsala headbands that would compliment virtually any hair color. Or, you can skip the headband and just dye your hair with a marsala shade of Manic Panic hair dye, also found at People’s Nation.

Adding a pop of marsala to a black outfit is a great way to wear the trend. Bare Foot has a pair of marsala Madden Girl combat boots that would look great with any LBD. It gets even better – they’re on sale!
