We customize our sneakers to meet our foot size and shape. We customize our Spotify playlists to fit the ~mood~ or ~vibes~ we want for any given day. Why should our workouts be one-size fits all? Everyone’s body composition is different, our personalities are different, and the way we like — or don’t like — to workout is different. Just because you despise running doesn’t mean working out isn’t for you altogether. There are so many different options when it comes to becoming physically fit and that is perhaps the coolest part of it all.

Do you spend every Thursday night at Indigo because you can’t get enough of the club-like dance vibes? Are you often found having solo dance parties to Beyoncé in your apartment? Zumba might be the workout for you! Offered on Penn State’s campus, Zumba is a fun and upbeat dance alternative to your typical workout. It can be viewed as more fun to some because of the group social aspect of a class and the music is usually really energizing so you don’t even notice you’re working out.

For the Workout Beast

Perhaps you get bored by a typical weight lifting session or don’t feel like you’re getting enough out of your workouts. CrossFit may be the alternative you’re looking for. CrossFit is entirely based off of functional movements that are performed at high intensity. Additionally, this specific type of fitness forms a community that is there to cheer you on while you do the workout. This intense comradery will work perfectly with your competitive nature.

For the Zen Lover

Is relaxation top priority for you with all of the stress that comes from life? Do you feel overwhelmed by the hustle and bustle of a gym and are looking for something slower yet will keep you in great shape? Yoga could be for you! The core values of yoga focuses on relaxation and unwinding. Don’t sleep on the health benefits though. This all-over body workout will leave you feeling zen while still feeling like you had a great sweat session.

For the Homebody

Maybe going to the gym or a fitness class just isn’t for you. Perhaps you don’t have time to set aside an hour from your day to workout. An at-home workout could be the perfect fit. No need to worry about who’s watching you workout or not being totally sure of what you’re doing. There are endless amounts of phone apps and workout guides from professionals and health enthusiasts that you can follow if you really don’t know where to begin.
