The charm of February always warms people’s hearts. With Valentine’s Day, it is hard not to get sappy and express your love. Most people know the five love languages— words of affirmation, quality time, physical touch, acts of service and receiving gifts— but what about the more specific acts we as individuals do on a daily basis to express our love? VALLEY knows that deep down, it is all about the little things, so here are some of the niche love languages that make up State College.

Keeping the Lights on

A roommate’s love is a special kind of love. It is familial, acting as your home base while at school. When you know that your roommate is stuck studying in Pattee all night long, some downtown roommates let their friends know that their hard work does not go unnoticed by leaving the big light on for them when they get home. The studier does not have to come home to a dark house, but rather one they are familiar with and comforted by. That is what love is all about.

“I’ll walk you home”

It is a blessing to live somewhere deemed as safe as Penn State, but a walk home after a night out will always mean more than meets the eye. A walk home shows that no matter how late you are leaving the bar, you are worth a few extra steps on your Apple watch. It is a protective act, a simple one of chivalry that is not seen as commonly as it should be. Next time your friend hits you with those Irish goodbye eyes, join them on their walk home, for safety and for company.

Two Grandes, Please!

There is something wholesome about seeing a boy at a coffee shop. Watching him rush into Starbucks and grab his two mobile orders, one for him and one for his partner at home, is endearing. Memorizing your partner’s coffee order is an intimate and innocent act of love, showing that you listen. Everyone likes coffee in bed, so snuggle up with your Starbs and you are sure to be a part of one happy couple.

The Lost Art of the Handhold

Whatever happened to holding hands? Not just as a vehicle for following someone out of the crowd, but actually holding hands while walking down the street. Not everyone is up for PDA, but holding hands is a wholesome way to show off your affection. Walking next to your partner and knowing they are there for you to reach out to is special, a physical embodiment of you two being in your own little world. Hold hands with pride next time you’re walking down College Ave, it is Valentine’s Day after all.
