“DEPP V. HEARD: NETFLIX DOCUMENTARY”- A NEW LOOK AT HISTORY

Trouble in Hollywood? The newly aired documentary “Depp V. Heard” accounts the trial of Johnny Depp and his ex-wife, Amber Heard takes the spotlight. The documentary has a new way of portraying the truth behind what really happened. In it, Amber Heard reveals the grueling details of her abusive relationship with Johnny Depp, or at least what we all thought had happened. 

The three episode Netflix series introduces us to a new view of documentaries, where evidence is referred back to social media platforms Tik Tok, Facebook, Instagram, and countless websites. Depp, a well-known actor, who has starred in popular movies such as Pirates of the Caribbean, Jack and Jill and 21 Jump Street” gets his dirty laundry aired in the media. The series unveiled his alcohol and drug addiction, presuming Depp to be the “bad guy” and ultimate “monster he could be when intoxicated,” Heard recounts in trial. 

Family members, ex-girlfriends, therapists, and producers were all called to trial to speak on stories they were told and encounters they witnessed between Depp and Heard. Each individual reported contradicting stories of the abuse in their relationship.

Where it begins…

Depp and Heard had a complicated relationship, speaking on behalf of each other about the constant tears and drama that followed alongside their love. Heard describes her relationship with her ex-husband vocalizing “We spoke to each other in a really horrible way,” revealing that there had been verbal abuse in their relationship.

Heard’s domestic violence allegations against Depp consisted of death threats, physical abuse sexual abuse, and PTSD. In retaliation to these accusations, Depp protected himself by claiming,

“There were fights and things like that, but it never got to the point where I hit Ms. Heard in any way…I’ve never hit a woman in my life…The allegations are based on no kind of truth and came as a total shock to me.”

The trial was majorly influenced by social media, as streaming grew due to the intense backstory. This not only portrays how invested these people became, but also how they abused the privilege of social media, resulting in content creators making the trial a story of their own. Having social media play such a big role not only benefited the popularity of the influencers commenting alongside the trial but also benefited Depp’s case, allowing outsiders to unveil the truth behind Heard’s false claims.

“Depp V. Heard ” is a documentary that truly aired what goes on behind closed doors. It allows one to understand just how big of an effect media can have on the life of anybody. In this case, if the documentary had not received influence from outsiders, the end result could have gone in a very different direction. Allowing Heard’s false allegations to ruin the life of an actor who had not abused his ex-wife.
