Britney Spears’ request to end her father’s role as her conservator has been denied by a judge. Following her public breakdown in 2007, Britney’s dad, James “Jamie” Spears, was appointed as the conservator of her estate. Now, after 13 years of which Britney says she has felt “enslaved,” she will still remain under her father’s control.
This rejection comes after an emotional testimony from Britney where she detailed the sort of unfair treatment she has been receiving. Her claims included that she was not allowed to take a break from work, get married, have more children and more. She even recalled being medicated with lithium against her wishes.
Jamie Spears has denied all the claims Britney made in court and his legal team came to his defense. Jamie’s attorney, Vivian Thoreen, said to CNN that Jamie “would love nothing more than to see Britney not need a conservatorship,” but that Britney was still incapable. She also went on to say that although Jamie and Britney may not see “eye-to-eye” he still believes all of his decisions have been in her best interest.
The #FreeBritney movement has fired up again following Britney’s most recent testimony, and many fans feel that her father is abusing his power. Sam Asghari, Britney’s boyfriend of five years, posted a selfie of him wearing a #FreeBritney T-shirt just before the testimony. Asghari has made his opinions on Jamie and the conservatorship clear in the past, having said he has “zero respect” for his girlfriend’s father, and that Jamie is a “total d—.”
It is unclear what lies ahead for Britney following the rejection of her request. What is clear is that Britney’s pain has been felt around the world, and she has received unwavering support from fans and other stars. Ex-boyfriend and “Mickey Mouse Club” co-star Justin Timberlake tweeted in support of his childhood friend.
