At only 24 years old, Anya Taylor-Joy has become one of the biggest names in Hollywood. She was recently awarded for her performance in the hit series “The Queen’s Gambit” at the 2021 Golden Globes. Taylor-Joy has become an extremely successful actress within the past several years, and it makes you wonder how she got to become one of the most recognized faces on the red carpet today.
Taylor-Joy was born to a family of eight, being the youngest of her five siblings. Although she was born in Miami, her family soon moved to Argentina and later to London. This probably explains her unique accent that many cannot place.
For as long as she can remember, Taylor-Joy dreamed of becoming an actress. At 16, she was scouted by a modeling agent and was lucky enough to meet an acting agent through the modeling world.
The true beginning of Taylor-Joy’s acting career came with the successful release of the period horror film “The Witch” in 2015. Taylor-Joy was 19 with little to no acting experience when she played the leading role of Thomasin in the movie. Her performance received substantial attention and acclaim from audiences, critics and directors alike. From then on, Taylor-Joy was an actress that people wanted to hire and that people wanted to watch.
For the next year or so, Taylor-Joy continued to land prominent acting roles in different films and television shows. In 2016, she was cast in another horror film, this time alongside renowned actor James McAvoy. In “Split,” Taylor-Joy played a teenager abducted by a man with multiple personalities.
She began to make a name for herself in the horror and thriller film industry. In 2017, she starred as Lily in “Thoroughbreds” and as Allie in “Marrowbone.” In 2019, she reprised her role in the “Split” sequel, “Glass.” However, Taylor-Joy voiced that she wanted to be known as more than an actress that is only in horror and thriller films. She wanted to start exploring other genres.
Following her supporting role in the hit television show “Peaky Blinders,” Taylor-Joy landed the lead role in “Emma” (2020), a period film based on Jane Austen’s novel.
In this starring role, she proved that she was capable of acting in a variety of genres and went on play Jen in the drama film, “Here are the Young Men,” as well as Illyana in “The New Mutants.”
Today, Taylor-Joy is recognized for her outstanding performance as Beth in “The Queen’s Gambit.”
Once the series hit Netflix, users started binging. With a 97% on Rotten Tomatoes, the series was destined for success. Viewers were drawn to Taylor-Joy’s character and raved about her performance. Funnily enough, chessboard sales soared after the series was released.
Evidently, Taylor-Joy should be recognized for much more than “The Queen’s Gambit.” She has built a successful career for herself on the foundation of her true love for acting. There is no doubt that we will continue to see Taylor-Joy in TV and film and that she will continue to blow us away.
