In honor of the Saint Pablo Tour coming to the BJC this Friday, Valley did some research (binge-listening on Spotify) and gathered some of Yeezus’s most relatable lyrics to Penn State students.
When actually listening to what this man says throughout his songs, most of his lines can seem a bit obscure, but believe it or not, sometimes Yeezus just gets it. For example…
“My childlike creativity, purity, and honesty is honestly being crowded by these grown thoughts”
Song: “Power”
This is for that feeling when you’re trying to explain yourself in class and end up making absolutely no sense, and then your professor looks at you like you’re crazy. If only Ye could be our professor; Ye understands better than anyone that the creative process is not to be disturbed. According to him, nothing you can possibly say is wrong.
“The plan was to drink until the pain was over / But what’s worse, the pain or the hangover?”
Song: “Dark Fantasy”
This one is for when you wake up Sunday morning after a weekend of celebrating all those exams you studied so hard for, and then you question whether or not you would actually rather be doing that all over again instead of feeling so dead inside.
“I can’t let these people play me / Name one genius that ain’t crazy”
Song: “Feedback”
Kanye knows that there is more to being smart than just test grades and GPAs. Next time anyone questions the way you go about something, hit them with this line.
“I’m living in that 21st Century doin’ something mean to it / Do it better then anybody you ever seen do it / Screams from the haters got a nice ring to it / I guess every superhero need his theme music”
Song: “Power”
If you’ve ever been to a Penn State football game, you know that this verse is bound to be stuck in your head for about 90 percent of the game. Thank you, Kanye, for always keeping Beaver Stadium and our football team super hype.
“And all I want is what I can’t buy now / Cause I ain’t got the money on me right now”
Song: “Blood on the Leaves”
This one might be the most relatable for college students, and it all comes down to one word: Broke.
“Bow in the presence of greatness / ‘Cause right now thou hast forsaken us / You should be honored by my lateness / That I would even show up to this fake s***”
Song: “Stronger”
What you really want to say to your professor when he/she reprimands you for being late to class again. But do yourself a favor and definitely just sing this one over in your head instead of saying it out loud.
“Hey, do you remember where we first met? / Okay, I don’t remember where we first met / But hey, admittin’ is the first step.”
Song: “Bound 2”
This one’s for every time you walked into the first day of class and knew you recognized someone from the night before, but can’t remember their name/where you saw them. So then you just nod your head and smile hoping they can’t tell how awkward you really feel on the inside. But hey, as Kanye says in this line, encounters like these could be the first step to some beautiful relationships — you never know!
“For ever ever? For ever ever? Ever ever? / Ever ever? Ever ever? Ever ever? Ever ever?”
Song: “Diamonds from Sierra Leone”
Okay yeah, this one’s just one of those Kanye lyrics that had to make the cut, because only Yeezus could sing this over and over and still make it sound cool.
It’s as if Kanye really could be a Nittany Lion after all. See him perform these hits along with several others in Happy Valley this Friday, Sept. 30 at the BJC.
