With the end of the Spring semester approaching, every Penn State student is gearing up for their perfect summer break. Whether you’re vacationing from May to August or waiting tables to save up for next year’s expenses, a break from academics and extracurriculars is much needed. However, the Fall semester will be here before you know it, and you don’t want to miss out on opportunities that are available now.

Many Fall semester commitments require applications before the end of the Spring semester. VALLEY has compiled a short list of organizations that have opportunities for next year so that you don’t miss the deadlines.

VALLEY Magazine

We couldn’t publish this article without mentioning VALLEY first, could we? If you’re an avid VALLEY reader you’re probably familiar with what we’re all about, but our About section covers everything that the magazine focuses on. And shameless plug — the V33 Launch Party (date to be announced soon!) will give you an in-person taste of everything you’re missing out on.

VALLEY has a plethora of opportunities for Penn State students (they’re not all editorial!). From PR, to modeling, to styling, to writing, the magazine can provide a creative space for any individual. Applications for positions are open for a few weeks right after finals, so be sure to keep an eye out (follow our Instagram and turn on post notifications if you’re worried about missing it).

Homecoming

If you’re looking for a low-commitment involvement opportunity, Homecoming’s Committee Member applications are open until April 5th. Penn State Homecoming works throughout the year to bring pride to all Penn State students and alumni, as well as running the largest student-run parade in the country before the Homecoming football game every fall.

Homecoming has five committees with Committee Members: Public Relations, Merchandise, OPPerations, Involvement Committee and Parade. With Homecoming being the week of Sept. 22 this year, this is a great involvement opportunity that won’t take up your whole Fall semester!

THON

You can’t go a week at Penn State without hearing something about THON, so it’s about time that you see what it’s all about. THON Spring Captain applications open in early April, and any Penn State student can apply. There are 16 different committees within THON, so you have plenty of choices for which sector you want to get involved with.

Getting involved in the largest student-run philanthropy in the world is a great opportunity to build your resume, strengthen your leadership skills and join a larger community at Penn State. And don’t worry if you don’t get your Spring Captain position — Fall Captain applications open in the late summer and are a great second chance at reaching your goal.

SPA Moderator

Are you a charismatic individual who is interested in having one-on-one conversations with guests like Ross Lynch, Brittany Broski or Sean Evans? The Student Programming Association (SPA) has an open application for moderators of interviews with high-profile individuals like those previously mentioned.

SPA hosts three to four events per semester where Penn State students can watch an in-person interview between a student and individuals that SPA brings to Penn State, and you could be that student interviewer! The application is linked in their Instagram bio, so apply now to show early interest for being a moderator in the Fall!

Your Organization

It may be obvious, but the easiest way to learn about upcoming opportunities is by asking those in the organizations you’re already involved with. Not only does already being a member of the club give you a step up compared to outsiders, but it shows higher-ups in your organization that you have been interested for a long time and are dedicated to growing your community.

Don’t be afraid to talk to people in your clubs about opportunities! Whether it’s a slightly bigger role or you’re running for president, you’ll regret it later if you procrastinate and miss the deadline.

Now back to what’s important: VALLEY. Wondering what we have to offer? Check out our Instagram @valleymag to see the amazing work of our talented members, and find your favorites so you can start crafting the perfect application. See you at the interview!
