The Spotlight Effect

There’s a psychological phenomenon that explains why when you trip on the divet in the sidewalk, you feel like everyone is staring, pointing and laughing. This is called the spotlight effect. This phenomenon makes you feel as though everyone is paying way more attention to you than they actually are. When odds are, no one actually saw you trip on the sidewalk.

What is the Spotlight Effect?

The spotlight effect is the illusion that a spotlight is always pointed at you. You feel as though everyone can see your minor flaws, such as the pimple that appeared on your face this morning or the strand of hair that won’t seem to lie down correctly. It gives the illusion that all those flaws scream, “Hey, look at me!” Reality is, it’s likely no one is going to notice; it’s just you. For people with social anxiety, this effect can be much worse. They are likely to be physically affected and unable to focus on work or other things because they cannot get rid of the feeling that everyone is noticing a small flaw.

Why are We Affected by It?

This phenomenon stems from egocentric bias. Egocentric bias is how we view the world from our own perspective and tend to believe that everything revolves around us. This makes us believe that we are the center of everyone’s attention because we are the center of our own attention. Everyone is likely experiencing this at the same time as you, so it’s unlikely that anyone is paying any attention to you because they’re too focused on their own spotlight effect.

Examples of the Spotlight Effect

Have you ever been walking in the library and started to notice how loud your footsteps are? You start to worry that you’re walking too loudly and you’re going to disturb everyone, or they’re all looking at you, annoyed at how loud you’re walking. Good news! This is likely the spotlight effect in action, and no one is hearing or cares how loud you’re walking.

Another example is maybe you didn’t have enough time to fully do your hair, skincare and maybe a little makeup before class. On your way to class and all while you’re in public, you worry that everyone is noticing your unbrushed hair and unmoisturized face. Once again, the odds are in your favor because everyone else is probably too worried about their own appearance and not focused on yours!
