Whether you’re a Swiftie or not, you’ve definitely heard about Taylor Swift’s new album, “The Life of a Showgirl.” Swift released her 12th studio album on Oct. 3, which features 12 tracks and a Sabrina Carpenter guest appearance. Since this is a Taylor Swift album, of course, there were several Easter eggs and unfortunate backlash on the internet.
The Life of a Showgirl
On the outside, “The Life of a Showgirl” is centered around Swift’s life during her year-and-a-half-long Eras Tour and her developing relationship with her now-fiancé, Travis Kelce. Across the tracks, Swift explores identity, fame, relationship rescue and betrayal all under the metaphorical gaze of the “showgirl” persona.
From the opening track, “The Fate of Ophelia,” Swift invokes Shakespeare’s tragic storytelling to dramatize what it feels like to drown under public scrutiny, only to be “dug out” by her love for Kelce. The title track, featuring Carpenter, frames the showgirl as both victim and spectacle while tracing a thin line between persona and self. Swift also ventures into interpersonal conflict in “Actually Romantic,” which is broadly interpreted as a lyrical rebuttal to Charli XCX.

Easter Eggs in Plain Sight
By now, we know that Swift loves to hide Easter eggs before everything she releases. During her last show of the Eras Tour, instead of normally leaving through an elevator lift, she exited through an orange door, hinting at the color scheme of “The Life of a Showgirl.” Swift said she was thrilled that people noticed the subtle hint when she promoted her new album on Kelce’s podcast, “New Heights.”
The reason why I chose to exit that way is because I kind of wanted to give a little subliminal hint to the fans that I may be leaving the Eras Tour era, but I was also entering a new era
– Taylor Swift.
Since this is Swift’s 12th album, she referenced the number 12 several times leading up to the announcement of the album. Dating back to October 2024, Swift posted a TikTok which featured a sign that said A12, which fans later realized meant Aug. 12, which was the day she announced her new album at 12:12 p.m. The album announcement also came 12 weeks after she revealed she bought the masters to all her albums. Also in the master’s announcement, Swift wrote she was “thiiiiiiiiiiiis close” to releasing new music, with the letter “I” written 12 times. These are only a few of the many Easter eggs she snuck in before releasing her album.

Backlash Against the Album
Just like Swift sang about in “Cancelled!” she and her friends are constantly being judged and scrutinized by the public, so naturally, her new album received a lot of backlash online. Many of her younger listeners labeled her album as “millennial cringe,” and her lyrics as shallow and cheesy. Swift has always been known as a lyrical genius and for how much time and effort she puts into her music, so it is unusual to see fans openly criticize her songwriting. Some fans online actually compared her album to “moonbeam ice cream,” which is a reference to Benson Boone’s “Mystical Magical,” which was also mocked by the internet for being a cheesy pop song. Regardless of what people say about the album, Swift said she’s “so proud” of the album. It has already passed 1 billion streams on Spotify in October alone.
