Winter is officially upon us, and lucky for us the season not only brings snow and ice but also some of the best TV shows. And speaking of ice, there is one new program that has everybody talking: “Heated Rivalry.”
Hollander Vs. Rosanov

“Heated Rivalry” is based on Rachel Reid’s spicy book series and released in weekly episodes on HBO Max beginning in November 2025.
The show stars Hudson Williams as Shane Hollander and Connor Storrie as Ilya Rosanov, two hockey stars who play for rival teams. Hollander is a Canadian native who plays for the Montreal Metros, and Rosanov is from Russia and plays for the Boston Raiders. It is also important to add that they are both gorgeous, because who says you can’t watch a show for the plot and the actors?
When the two first meet, there is already an instant spark as Rosanov lights his cigarette and Hollander compliments him by saying he is a great player to watch. From there, the show cuts to different time jumps that follow each encounter they have. What starts as games of flirtatious eye tag quickly develops into a series of hot and heavy hookups.
“Well if I come to 1410 tonight at nine o’clock…”
“I might open.”
“I might knock.” -Rosanov and Hollander
Enemies On The Ice, Boyfriends In The Bedroom

“Heated Rivalry” features a trope that viewers can’t help but love: enemies on paper, but lovers in real life. (Sorry Hollander, we know you would say that’s gross.)
Although Hollander and Rosanov play for opposing teams, they can never stay truly mad when one of them wins a game. Even when the two have to pretend to be serious rivals for a video shoot, Rosanov cannot stop laughing, which creates an adorable moment.
The “smack talk” between the two players is especially cute, since they definitely don’t hate each other despite the public’s assumption that they do. Throughout the show, Rosanov repeatedly calls Hollander boring, which becomes a hilarious part of their banter, but also a term of endearment. Hollander also hits Rosanov with a series of “f*ck yous” and “You are such an asshole.” Let’s face it, they aren’t fooling anyone. We know they secretly love each other.
“Never in life have I blushed. Russians do not do this.” -Ilya Rosanov
Jane And Lily

From the outside looking in, Hollander and Rosanov could not be more different. Ilya is confident and goes after what he wants, while Hollander is more introverted and hesitant about their secret relationship. However, it is this dynamic that makes the pair so perfectly adorable. Ilya never judges Shane for his small quirks and insecurities, which allows Shane to truly open up to him.
The difficulty of their relationship is that hockey is viewed as a heteronormative sport, and being openly gay is not accepted in Russia. To avoid dealing with these barriers, Shane and Ilya decide to stay in touch by using the pen names Jane and Lily, so that no one will suspect their relationship.
During the time jumps, the audience gets to see the pair’s flirty texts as they message each other in between encounters and during the summer off-season. As they each smile down at their phones, we can’t help but manifest a situationship like theirs for ourselves.
“I just hope Jane knows how lucky he is.” -Svetlana, to Ilya
Shane And Ilya

One of the most prominent moments of their relationship is when Shane and Ilya switch from calling each other by their last names to their first names. This switch symbolizes the shift in their relationship from a casual hookup to a deep and romantic connection. The beauty of “Heated Rivalry” is in the details — each time you re-watch it, you may notice something new, which is why this show is so special.
We can’t go without talking about the last episode of the show (spoilers ahead), which is when Ilya joins Shane at his cottage and their relationship is accidentally revealed to Shane’s parents. In this episode, we get to see Shane and Ilya spend time together in the open outdoors as opposed to dimly-lit hotel rooms, which symbolize their hopes to one day not have to hide their relationship.
When Shane comes out to his parents and tells them about his relationship with his hockey rival, Ilya comforts him and refers to himself as his boyfriend. This is when we, as well as Shane’s parents, see that they are truly in love.
“We’re good here. Your family is here. Your boyfriend is here. You’re good here, ok?” -Ilya, to Shane
Reheated Rivalry

According to Glamour, HBO has confirmed that there will be a second season, and Williams and Storrie have even signed on for three seasons if it is renewed again. Director Jacob Tierney said that it won’t be ready for a winter 2026 release, but it will be pretty soon after that since they want to work as quickly as possible.
For now, we have the beauty of re-watching the first season, which many people on social media platforms like TikTok are hilariously referring to as “Reheated Rivalry.”
