In Defense of Performative Dressing

In recent weeks, the controversial topic of ‘performative dressing’ has taken social media by storm, sparking conversations about authenticity and self-expression through fashion. ‘Performative dressing’ refers to dressing with the intent of publicly showcasing an outfit to project a certain image or identity, rather than to reflect genuine personal style.

Recently, those posting their outfits online have been slammed for ‘performative dressing’ when, in reality, they’re simply showcasing their sense of style. Such quick-fire accusations have contributed to a larger issue among younger generations: widespread conformity to trends and a decline in individuality and self-expression through fashion.

In a time when anyone can reach millions with just a few clicks, you’d expect a surge of individuality and creative expression. Instead, many have fallen victim to the pressures of keeping up with fleeting trends and inauthentic styles. For this very reason, it has never been more important to come to the defense of what the internet likes to call ‘performative dressing’.

Dressing for Your Dopamine: Wear What Makes You Happy!

As silly as it may sound, the clothes we choose to put on in the morning have the power to change the course of our day. Wearing something that reflects your personality and sense of style will carry you throughout your day with confidence. Dressing for a fleeting trend that falls outside of your style will leave you susceptible to self-doubt and a lack of confidence.

Don’t be afraid to pull that bright colored sweater from its hanger when picking your outfit of the day. Whether it’s a chunky chain or a pair of patterned pants, incorporating one thing that makes you happy into your outfit is the easiest way to set yourself up for success.

Functionless Fashion

Many of these performative accusations are rooted in accessories that do not serve a functional purpose, such as nonprescription glasses, headscarves and chunky, embellished jewelry. The thing is, accessories are just that, accessories. They infuse an otherwise monotonous outfit with a flair of individuality and personal style. Clothing and accessories don’t need a specific purpose. Sometimes, the purpose is simply to express your personal style.

Style to Withstand the Test of Time

In an era of fast fashion and micro-trends, finding pieces that feel authentic to your personal style makes all the difference in building a wardrobe that will withstand the test of time. Arguably, nothing is chicer than wearing a piece into the ground. Instead of throwing money at clothes you’ll wear only until the next “it” trend comes along, invest in curating pieces you truly love, ones you’ll reach for often and can style a million different ways. Your future self will thank you for curating a closet full of your fabulous favorite pieces.

Leaning Into What Makes Your Style Unique Isn’t Shallow; It’s Brave.

Discovering one’s personal style doesn’t always come easy. It takes trial and error, especially when experimenting with what works for your style and what doesn’t. When in doubt, the style that will always impress is your own.

Be bold enough to wear the pieces that inspire you! Lean into wearing that secondhand find you were so excited to discover or that statement midi skirt you’ve been holding off on. Dressing like yourself is the best way to promote unapologetic self-confidence. It’s not dressing for attention, it’s dressing for self-approval.
