The Drama Behind “Scream 7”

The seventh installment in the “Scream” franchise was released in theaters Feb. 27, 2026 (nearly three years after the sixth film). However, the film’s rollout seems to have become its own kind of horror story. Since its beginning, the project has been surrounded by controversy and this drama has only gotten worse since the film’s theatrical release.

**Warning: this article will include spoilers for “Scream 7.”

Casting and Directorial Changes

The turmoil began during early production, after it was announced that Melissa Barrera, who had been the lead for the previous two films, had been fired after making posts condemning the war in Gaza and sharing her support for Palestine. Shortly after this, it was revealed that studio executives had asked Barrera to step away from the project because they found her posts to be antisemitic.

Not long after, Jenna Ortega confirmed she would also not be returning for “Scream 7.” The official reason given was due to scheduling conflicts with “Wednesday,” although many fans speculate that Ortega’s decision to step away was made in solidarity for her co-star.

Along with losing the two main leads of the film, the project also went through several directing changes. After Tyler Gillett and Matt Bettinelli-Olpin (co-directors of “Scream” (2022) and “Scream VI”) stepped away from the franchise, Christopher Landon was announced as their replacement. However, shortly after in December 2023, Landon announced on X that he too would be leaving the project. He shared that,

It was a dream job that turned into a nightmare. And my heart did break for everyone involved. – Landon’s X account (@creetureshow)

Back To The OG

With so many changes happening behind the scenes, the film’s original storyline had to be heavily reworked. The departure of Barrera and Ortega meant the story could no longer center on the Carpenter sisters, forcing writers to quickly pivot in a completely new direction. It is reported that the extensive script rewrites cost around $500,000, with major plot points, character arcs and the overall structure of the story all needing to have been rebuilt.

The shift ultimately led the franchise back to its roots, bringing back original final girl Neve Campbell to reprise her role as Sidney Prescott. Campbell had notably sat out the sixth film due to pay disputes, so when her return was announced many fans saw this as an attempt to put the project back into their good graces.

Fans Push Back

Throughout this process, fans of the franchise have not been quiet. After Barrera was fired, many called for a boycott of the film, not wanting to support a project with ties to a pro-Israel studio. This backlash has been kept up even after the film’s release, with critics continuously ridiculing the movie. “Scream 7” now currently holds a 31% score on Rotten Tomatoes, making it the lowest rated installment in the entire franchise.

Some fans share that their biggest issue they had with the movie was the film’s direction. “Scream” (2022) and “Scream VI” introduced audiences to an entirely fresh new group of characters that they could fall in love with and root for. Now with “Scream 7” shifting the focus back to the original final girl, Sidney, many are saying that the story now feels stale. A common complaint going around online about the movie is that it feels like a “remake of a remake.”

The Ghostface Reveal

When the trailer first dropped, speculation about the new Ghostface killer quickly spread online. Many fans theorized that Matthew Lillard might return as Stu Macher and wear the Ghostface mask once again. However, by the movie’s final act, it became clear that this would not be the case. In the end, it was revealed that our Ghostface killers were Jessica Bowden (Sidney’s crazed neighbor), Marco Davis (a psych hospital orderly) and Karl Gibbs (an escaped psych patient). Shortly after the reveal, fans flooded social media to voice their disappointment, arguing that the new killers lacked any real impact and that overall the twist felt underwhelming.
