On Oct. 31 Megan Thee Stallion released her Prime Video exclusive documentary “Megan Thee Stallion: In Her Words” where she exposed vulnerable parts of herself to fans and the struggles she has endured since becoming famous.
Who is Megan Thee Stallion?
Megan Thee Stallion is a three-time Grammy Award winner, American rapper, singer and songwriter originally from Houston, Texas. She began getting attention after posting videos of herself freestyling on YouTube and Instagram and reached mainstream stardom after several of her songs, such as Savage, blew up on TikTok.

Birth of Thee Stallion: Chapter 1
The documentary opens with Megan walking across the stage at Texas Southern University to receive her diploma while looking back on the losses she’s experienced along the way.
The documentary continues by showing the beginning of Megan’s journey with music and her rapping career. Inspired by her mother’s love of rap, music has always played an important role in Megan’s childhood.
After the death of her father in the ninth grade, Megan turned to rapping as a way to distract herself from the grief. During this time, she created the alter ego “Megan Thee Stallion.”
“I think Megan Thee Stallion is trying to protect Megan Pete.”

Eventually, she began posting videos on YouTube which then rocketed her to mainstream popularity. Her career continued to grow and she began performing at bigger venues. Right before a show, her mom was rushed to the hospital and it was discovered she had a tumor in her brain and shortly passed away.
The documentary continues by showing how even in grief, Megan kept devoting herself to her work and continuing to grow as an artist. She began hitting milestone accomplishments such as her first BET award nomination, winning a VMA and creating a remix with Beyonce.
The chapter concluded by showing us the lead up to the night Tory Lanez shot Megan in the foot and the backlash she began receiving on social media after the incident.

Alone In The Spotlight: Chapter 2
Chapter two starts off with showing Megan getting ready for a CBS Morning interview, sharing her side of the story after the Tory Lanez incident. Throughout this chapter, we see how Megan was struggling not only with PTSD from the shooting but also with the backlash of what people online were saying about her.
Many came to Tory Lanez’s support and believed that Megan was lying about being shot. Many also criticized her for “messing around” with Tory Lanez even though her best friend, Kelsie, was supposedly seeing him. Regardless of all the struggles she was facing, she still continued to create music and headline at massive music events.
“I’m tired of feeling on edge and I’m tired of pretending like I’m not on edge.”

Megan’s anxiety severely worsened after the shooting, and she couldn’t help but feel like there was no one looking out for her. People on social media were constantly making vulgar jokes about the incident and that, “Tory should’ve aimed higher.” Even in the studio, Megan said she no longer felt like herself.
However, she continued to persist and treated this time creating her album, Traumazine, as her therapy. Throughout her time creating this album Megan learned how to express what she was feeling and being brave enough to share it with the world.
Even after receiving amazing awards like being given the key to the city for Houston, and putting out multiple Billboard Hot 100 songs, Megan struggled with seeing her accomplishments. She opened up and said her mom would always be the one to tell her good job, and that’s when she knew she did something good.
Without her mom, she struggled to see the true value of what she was accomplishing. After performing on SNL, it was discovered that Megan’s house had been broken into and shortly after she went on a mental health retreat for a month.

The Savage Within: Chapter 3
Chapter three opens with Megan sharing how it was her feeling like her life had no value that was the final straw for her to take a step back from everything. During her time away Megan said how her therapist would make her go back and reimagine the shooting step by step and learn how to process what had happened. After a month away, Megan returned to music and the public eye feeling like a new person.
After learning how to properly process what she had endured, Megan felt ready to face Tory in court while she shared her side of the story. The documentary takes us through Megan’s experience testifying against Tory Lanez during the trial and the long waiting game of finding out who had won.
While Megan is sitting in her backyard with her friend it is announced that Tory Lanez was found guilty to the first degree and was sentenced to 10 years in prison. Megan immediately breaks down into tears at the relief of knowing she has gotten justice for everything she went through.
Megan concludes her documentary by sharing music from her new era and expressing to other women out there that it is possible to speak out about the violence they have endured and stand up for themselves.
“Just as a snake sheds its skin, we must shed our past.”
