Trends are cyclical, but taste takes time. What we wore as toddlers to go play outside and make messes may not reflect our true identities, as parents picked out our entire wardrobes and dressed us each day.
Although these serves were literally on a smaller scale, some styles remain largely influential. Looking back on some of the fits I threw as a kid — how do they match up to my current fashion taste and would I still wear them today if I could find them in my size?
Too Young for Y2K

Popped-hip, pigtails and coordinating pink accessories — I knew I was that girl. In fact, I know this outfit would still look just as cute walking around campus between classes, putting my velcro princess shoes to work. Well, maybe I’d change up the footwear and hairstyle a little… but back then it made the look.
I love a good pair of sunglasses and it never hurts to have an extra layer with a zip-up; if those still fit me, I’d be styling them constantly. My favorite thing about this outfit is how cute but also functional it is. Not only could a toddler tear it up on the playground in this, but it’s a perfect everyday look even in 2026.
Dressing for the Job You Want

Rest in Peace Justice — your matching neon outfits and sequined shirts are sorely missed by the newer generations. Here I’m dressing up as my dream job, “Writer/Illustrator/Ballerina,” because I’ve always been indecisive and fashionable. However, you don’t need to make decisions with Justice sets, pick your color or activity and boom — you have the perfect outfit.
While I don’t think I would wear this now, besides maybe the boots with something really fierce, I think it perfectly encapsulates that era. Looks like these were the haute couture of grade school.
Cowgirl Chic

I have no idea what occasion warranted such a southern style, but imagine this at the frats. Head-to-toe coordination, ensuring that even without cowboy boots I’m ready for a rootin’ tootin’ good time. Although the hat does help solidify the theme, I do think it’s a little overkill with the ribbon placement as well.
The layering is honestly on point, not to mention an actually cute jean skirt that doesn’t constantly constrict my movement. While I’m more of a city girl, I’d definitely still devour this look for a themed function.
Disney Channel Original

According to my mother’s Facebook, I helped pick out this outfit because it was both “girlie and cool.” The matching pink plaid on the skirt and messenger hat is so early 2000s “Disney Channel,” especially when you add the black leggings and flats. This might be one of the only times in my life I ever optionally wore flats, so I won’t be asking for those in the modern era.
Once again, I think this outfit is perfect for its time—I know some Depop reseller would be scrunching the waist of my t-shirt and calling it “Y2K vintage.” Although overall it’s not my style at this point in my life, I think I’d want the hat as that style cap seems to be making a resurgence already.
