Harry Styles’ Historic Moment

Since 1892, Vogue has been providing the world with the ins and outs of the fashion world, cover stories and historic moments. In 2020, this magazine has continued to raise the bar.

Harry Styles is on the cover of Vogue’s December issue — making him the first male solo cover star in Vogue history. The cover features Styles in a blue dress and blazer. The dress is a custom Gucci piece, which has been seen on the runway as a light pink dress.

The spread also includes Harry wearing patterned skirts, shorts and another dress that is beyond extra — having pink tulle and a hoop skirt. The initial reaction from his fans was excitement. Styles was trending on Twitter and many were excited because he even performed an acoustic version of his song “Cherry” where at the end he exclaims, “Thank you fashion!”

Harry has opened up in interviews before saying that fashion is a way of expressing one’s self.

In an earlier edition of Vogue from 2019, they quote an interview he had with The Guardian, “What women wear. What men wear. For me it’s not a question of that,” the 25-year-old revealed in an interview with The Guardian. “If I see a nice shirt and get told, ‘But it’s for ladies.’ I think: ‘Okaaaay? Doesn’t make me want to wear it less though… I think the moment you feel more comfortable with yourself, it all becomes a lot easier.”

On the days following the release, Twitter wasn’t as nice. American author Candace Owens tweets in response to the cover to, “Bring back manly men.” This led to a dispute about Harry’s cover, where both sides of the argument got extremely heated and got even more celebrities involved.

Most celebrities, however, sided with Harry as he has just wanted to not care what others think. Olivia Wilde, an actress and movie director for the upcoming film “Don’t Worry Darling” in which Harry is starring in added to the argument tweeting back to Candace Owens, “You’re pathetic.”

In more recent news, AOC says she thinks that Harry, “Looks wonderful.”

Harry in a past documentary for One Direction titled “This Is Us” says he, “Always wanted to be one of those people who didn’t really care that much about what people thought of them…but I just don’t think I am.”

This Vogue cover shoot emphasizes that Harry is just doing what makes him happy — and what’s wrong with that?

Clothes don’t have to have a gender and Harry has been trying to break down that barrier for years. Vogue isn’t the first time he’s broken gender norms and it for sure won’t be the last.

Styles’ motto is to “Treat People With Kindness.” So no matter the opinion, it is important to remember that it is easier to love than hate and to practice the words of the great Harry Styles — treat people with kindness. Always.
