Camo in Copenhagen

Copenhagen Fashion Week celebrated its 20th Anniversary last month in some of the coldest conditions the fashion industry has yet to face. “Fashion’s fifth city” welcomed attendees with snow-covered streets piled more than seven inches high and roaring -10 degree winds. This didn’t prevent fashion’s finest from showing up and showing out in their Copenhagen-spirited street style!

Street Style takes the Gold

Despite the week’s elaborate festivities, featuring more than 21 shows from fashion houses across the globe, arguably the most notable fashion moments were seen walking the city’s cobblestone streets. The Danes left monochromatic, minimalist collections to the pros in Milan and instead did what they do best: take a more whimsical approach to fashion.

Lots of Layers

Copenhagen’s sub-zero temperatures called for layers– and lots of ‘em. The week’s cold conditions left fashion week attendees to dress at the intersection of fashion and function. The week’s guests claimed their status as leaders in cold-weather dressing, taking to the streets in an array of pattern-maxxing pieces and elevated staples, attempting to combat the cold. “InStyle Magazine” phrased it best saying “If fashion capitals had distinct personalities, Copenhagen would be the optimist”. The week’s street style featured dopamine-inducing color palettes, bold accessories and exaggerated silhouettes.

Camo Revival

Despite the recent animal-print fashion mania, perhaps the most standout trend of the week in Copenhagen was camouflage. The pattern was seen strutting through the streets, appearing on everything from floor-sweeping trench coats to contemporary cargo pants. Paired with the Vogue-proclaimed “color of the season,” chartreuse green, the pattern emerged in both classic green shades and edgier desert-toned variations.

This utilitarian comeback was pulled out of the fashion archives just in time to help Copenhagen’s glamorous guests brave the harsh weather conditions. Camouflage appeared everywhere throughout the week — peeking out from utility boots, layered beneath yellow snakeskin jackets, and emerging through gloves tucked into tailored cuffs. The print surfaced across bold accessories, including the week’s standout funky hat craze, as well as understated staples layered beneath statement looks. If this fashion week has proven anything, it’s that camouflage is both a statement and a staple

Ironically, fashion fans have Copenhagen’s freezing weather to thank for the electric trends and looks seen on the city’s streets this Fashion Week. Attendees came prepared in their sub-zero degree finery, curating some of the strongest street style looks the fashion industry has seen in years. After all, as the Danes say, “There is no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothes.”
