“Spill the tea” became a popular phrase among Gen Z in the late 2010s. It was casually used in conversation to share secrets and gossip. This wasn’t its first use though, as the phrase originated from drag culture in the ‘90s. Nowadays, there’s a new kind of tea: the plethora of flags/comments on the Tea Dating Advice app. So sit back and sip, VALLEY is here to show you the newest way to date.

How It Works
Anonymous users can post prompts online about men they’re interested in. For example, a Penn State student could post about another, asking the online community if they’re a red flag. From there, other users can comment, green flag or red flag them.
The green flags typically mean the guy is generally good, and that they’re “approved” dating material. The red flags indicate that the man in question is less than desirable. A user can post a poll too, asking questions like if they should date him or leave him alone.

Sweet Intentions
The app is meant to help women stay safe on the dating scene. While it essentially ranks male partners, the rankings can help users make safe relationship decisions. Tea Dating Advice can minimize dating struggles for women by helping them share their stories online.
In addition to the flagging and comment sections, users can do an offense search, look up a phone number and set name alerts. This means that women can look online to see if their potential partner committed any crimes. They can also set an alert to see how many times their potential mate’s name is mentioned in their town/city.

Tea For Today
The Penn State dating scene can be a bit tough. Some men are honest, some men lie. Some men ignore women, some men say they try. Even when you feel down about it, there is a whole community who are going through the same thing.
Rating others can seem distasteful, but not in the case of love. Apps like Tea Dating Advice offer a system that helps women learn all about their potential dates. In this technological age, it’s crucial to get as much available information. No one wants a broken heart that could’ve been saved.
Tea has evolved from sharing gossip to online ranking systems. While the mode of communication has changed, one thing remains the same: dating. It was strange centuries ago and it is strange now. The next time a man does you dirty, don’t worry. Just sit back, grab your phone and sip some tea.
