The Black natural hair movement has been an ongoing trend for over 10 years now. From an Afro to Cornrows, Black hair has been a controversial topic for a plethora of reasons. The discourse surrounding what “good hair” is to what hair texture you really are! But for Black girls growing up, hair is a symbol of our freedom (or lack thereof). College is the time to experiment and become a new version of yourself, for Black girls showcase their diversity in a different way by sharing Black hair can be free. But the dilemma of choosing what style to get can be hard for anyone including myself. Spring break is coming up and I know that most girls are wondering how they’re going to finish off their hair for the rest of the semester. One thing about this style… your hair better have body to it! Wigs have been a go-to style in the last few years for Black girls wanting to protect their own hair from consistent product manipulation. While this style does take some management from re-gluing and styling it is a good way to keep your hair protected. Wigs can be very versatile from headband wigs to lace front wigs. They come at many different prices depending on if you want human or synthetic hair. To add some extra flair to this style… why not add a pop of color!

Normal Box and Knotless braids are a long-lasting, no-heat protective style. With proper management and taking care of your hair, this style can keep your hair done for 2 months near the end of the semester. Whether you choose your own hair color, try a new color or add extra curly pieces…. any new addition you chose will help you customize your hair to your own liking!

Oui Oui Curly!

As previously mentioned, braids are a great protective style for Black girls to wear. But a new braid style is on the rise that’s combining old and new-age Black hairstyles. Layered French curl braids are a new style that can be done with knotless braids or box braids. Management of style is not too much of a hassle however, you might want to curl the ends of the hair with rollers and dip them in hot water to achieve the original look.

Fro-tastic

Afros are a staple within the Black community. No matter what hair texture you have, pick out your hair to create that fantastic bubble shape. Black hair is not hard to “manage” it just takes time. But I understand for some people, waking up in the morning and consistently prepping your hair every day can be a task, especially in cold weather. For the Black girls who wear their hair every day, we support and applaud you for being true to your authentic self!

Locking it up!

Faux locs are a fast and long last styling style that gives you the illusion of having real locs. From curly ends to softer textures, faux locs are a non-time-consuming but adjustable style that you can install on yourself. Now beware, while this style is long-lasting it can be unruly if you don’t maintain your hair’s healthiness. Sometimes if you leave faux locs in for too long it can potentially lock up your real hair underneath. Wearing this style for 4-6 weeks is the perfect amount to keep this hairstyle!
