From her collection of essays, “No One Asked for This,” to her web series, “Eighty-Sixed,” Cazzie David isn’t new to criticizing, and humorizing, the cruel realities of modern dating. Now, alongside her best friend and writing/directing partner Elisa Kalani, David has brought her talents, and realist outlook, to the big screen with her new movie titled, “I Love You Forever.” It’s dark, funny, romantic-ish, but above all brutally relatable.

“I Love You Forever,” stars Sofia Black-D’Elia, Ray Nicholson, Jon Rudnitsky as well as Cazzie David herself. The film follows 25-year-old law student Mackenzie, played by Sofia Black-D’Elia, as she takes a break from non-committal hook-up culture and gives love a chance after meeting Finn, played by Ray Nicholson, a charming news anchor.
Sounds perfect right? Wrong, just watch the movie.
As Pete Davidson’s first famous ex-girlfriend, we trust David with the task of accurately portraying the turmoils of dating in the 21st century alongside our biggest critic: the internet.

When describing how this movie came to be in an interview with Cultured Magazine, David said, “…my writing partner and I wanted to write something that felt like a rom-com for our generation. It came together perfectly, because the textbook emotionally abusive relationship starts out feeling like a fairy tale or a once-in-a-lifetime love story.”
Sigh, we can relate. Watching this movie felt like getting to watch your roommate’s semester-long situationship, that they were unaware was in fact a situationship, sped up on your living room flat-screen.
“I Love You Forever,” is a love letter to Gen Z that hits the mark so many recent rom-coms have missed. It includes all of the humor that lies within heartbreak and is a poignant reminder that we all succumb to delusions in dating but it’s okay to laugh at ourselves and our friends as they unfold.

This film serves as both a cautionary tale and a celebration of the awkwardness it takes to put yourself out there, digitally or IRL. Whether you’ve been in a similar situation or simply enjoy dissecting the cringe-worthiness of modern romance, “I Love You Forever” delivers a story that is all too real.
The movie currently has a 79% rating on rotten tomatoes which may not be Oscar worthy but is definitely worth the watch for roommate movie night.
