We’ve all heard the phrase “oh, that’s her color.” Searching for a prom dress, picking out what nail color to get or even what this season’s hair color will look like. Certain colors look good on certain people. It’s a science, really. The different combos of skin tones, eye colors and even a person’s energy can have an impact on what colors look best on them.
It’s not hard to have a preference. It’s simple to quickly grab that comfort color when you see it on a clothes rack, and only buy gold jewelry because “it’s your color.” But is it really?

How it works
Color analysis is the most recent way to determine what colors actually suit a person. Color analysts go into the most meticulous details of analyzing the combo of a person’s skin tone and overall features. The main purpose of color analysis is to determine what colors and tones look best on a person.
While routine procedure may vary depending on where you go, it is typical for analysts to ask you to walk into your session with no makeup on. Upon arrival, clients will be asked to fill out paperwork where they self-assess what they think their color palette is and what colors they tend to lean towards.
A series of different colored cloths are placed next to the clients skin to assess what brings out their features best. The analyst will go through different color palettes— including various types of metals. There is a wide range of different color palettes that the analyst will look at when picking what set of colors works best for the client. Some of the color pallets include summer cool, autumn warm and winter deep.

Benefits
Many clients of color analysts have found themselves paying more attention to color when shopping. Having an understanding of what you will look and feel more confident in can lead to better shopping habits all around—– which can be a very helpful tool in today’s consumer-heavy society. With that being said, there are two options for getting color analyzed: seeking professional help and doing it yourself.
Getting it done
While both ways help you figure out what color dress to buy, it’s often said “You get what you pay for.” If looking to seek professional help, it is best to research local color analysts near your hometown. With the limited options of State College, some of the nearest color analysis studios are located in Philadelphia and Pittsburg.
On a cheaper and more convenient route, it is possible to attempt to color analyze yourself at home. While less accurate than a professional’s advice, there are a plethora of TikTok filters and apps that you can download to get a general idea of your color palette.
