It’s that time of year again! Dust off your favorite pair of running shoes and get ready for Penn State’s annual THON 5K.

Each fall semester, Penn State hosts a 5K fundraiser where all contributions go directly to finding a cure for childhood cancer. By purchasing a slot to participate in this race around campus, you are directly contributing to the largest student-run philanthropy organization in the world.

Signing Up

Registration for this event opened early September, but it is still running. By navigating to the THON store’s website, you can purchase a slot to participate in this race for just $15. Merchandise will be available for purchase at the finish line and all proceeds will go directly to THON.

The THON 5K serves as a space for the Penn State community to come together and thrive. Four Diamond families will participate in the race alongside other individuals who seek to support THON and Penn State.

If you don’t want to run in the race but still want to show your support for participants, line the sidelines to cheer on racers as they reach the finish line!

Building Community

The 5K serves as a connection between the community as small businesses have spaces to vend food and products at the end of the race. Once the 5K is complete, there will be a variety of activities to enjoy to keep the entertainment and community-building going well into the rest of the day.

From different THON committees wearing themed costumes to a variety of vendors waiting to fuel runners at the end of the track, this 5K showcases the importance of community involvement.

Participating in this event not only supports THON through donations, but also gives love to the Four Diamond families who are looking for support.

History Of The 5K

The 5K first began in 2001 as a way to get the community involved and excited for THON’s main event in the spring. The 5K has since become a perfect opportunity to jump start the donation process, serving as a fundraiser directly contributing to Four Diamonds.

This event also serves as a community builder within Penn State’s student-run organizations. THON committees work together to plan and run this event, which gives them the opportunity to build relationships and collaboration skills in preparation for THON weekend.

The first 5K in 2002 reached an unpredictable amount of success from the overwhelming number of participants. Now, 23 years later, this event has become a staple in encouraging donations and excitement for THON weekend in February.
