The Met Gala, often called “fashion’s biggest night,” is a decades-long tradition that celebrates the history and artistic nature of fashion. With its unique themes every year, the Met Gala provides celebrities the opportunity to be creative and authentically express themselves through clothing.

What is “Costume Art”?

The 2026 Met Gala is scheduled for May 4, 2026, and the theme was recently revealed as “Costume Art.” The theme aims to highlight the evolution and connection between fashion, art and the human body.

The 2026 Met Gala will showcase the exhibit of the same name created by The Costume Institute. Highlighting over 200 garments and almost 200 pieces of artwork, the exhibition is open to the public from May 10, 2026, to Jan. 10, 2027. More specifically, the exhibition will place a collection of paintings and sculptures from the past five centuries alongside fashion garments. It will be divided into three categories: classical/nude bodies, underrepresented bodies, such as aging and pregnant and the anatomical body.

Unlike past exhibits, mannequins will play a greater role in enforcing the unique theme. Artist Samar Hejazi was hired to design mirrored heads for each mannequin.

“I’ve always wanted to try to bridge the gap between the viewer and the mannequin. Part of that is to reflect on the lived experience of the bodies you’re looking at, and also to reflect your own lived experience—to facilitate empathy and compassion,” said Andrew Bolton, curator of the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute.

Predictions for Red Carpet Looks

Many are wondering how this theme will translate to the fashion choices of Met Gala attendees. Fashion insiders predict many sculptural silhouettes, embodying the architectural pieces featured in the exhibit. These silhouettes include corseted waists and structured shoulders. Sheer designs using materials such as mesh are also expected to be featured on the red carpet, highlighting the texture of skin and the shape of different body types.

Since Saint Laurent is sponsoring the event, it is predicted that several of their styles will be on the Met Gala red carpet. Known for their masculine tailoring, eccentric silhouettes and elegant lace detailing, Saint Laurent’s designs can help attendees create a look that embodies both classical and contemporary art.

Similar to 2018’s theme “Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination,” insiders also believe that many outfits will reflect Renaissance art pieces. Since the “Costume Art” theme emphasizes the evolution of art and fashion, incorporating Renaissance art will highlight an influential era of artistic exploration.

Although the outfit is the most defining aspect of Met Gala fashion, accessories can also be used as a tool for theme interpretation. For example, many celebrities might incorporate bold statement jewelry, decorative masks and reflective embellishments to elevate their styles to the next level.
