Hozier’s Yell at Penn State

A new TikTok trend has users posting videos of a big moment in their lives with the song “Northern Attitude (with Hozier)” by Noah Kahan and Hozier playing over it –– specifically the part when Hozier yells. Users caption these videos with “a moment that felt like Hozier’s yell.” Some of them are silly, capturing funny moments from their nights out. But there are also videos of high schoolers getting into college, people traveling to a beautiful place or getting married. This sound is supposed to represent a feeling of euphoria and pure joy. It represents a moment that changed the user’s life.

So, here are VALLEY Penn State moments that feel like Hozier’s yell.

A Football Game at Sunset

The sun is just beginning to set and a trace of orange outlines the blue stadium. In the student section, you watch the game, with cheers sprinkled in and pom poms shaking like white waves. You are there with your friends or your roommates or your family. The fall breeze feels nice after a long day of tailgating, and you don’t even realize your feet are hurting. This is why I came to Penn State, you think to yourself.

Signing your First Apartment Lease

If there’s one thing about Penn State, it’s that housing is a nightmare. Finding roommates who you will get along with, an apartment in your price range and a place in the right location is difficult. But, that moment when it all comes together and you sign your lease –– it takes a huge weight off of your shoulders. To have that checked off of your to do list, especially freshman year, is the best feeling. And, now you have something to look forward to: living in your first apartment.

When the Bartender Makes Eye Contact with You

You’re standing at a crowded bar, waiting to get a drink –– tapping your credit card on the counter. You are stone-cold sober, and the volume of the music is really starting to get to you. Then, all of a sudden, the bartender makes eye contact with you. You shout your order to him, over the noise, and they start making your drink. Hozier’s yell fits perfectly with this joyous feeling.

Using a Fake Text to get into a Party… And it Works

You walk up to the front door of this party, hearing all of the music blasting and lights flashing through the windows. You have a text on your phone, but you are signed into your friend’s GroupMe. Your hand shakes, nervous that they will (somehow) know it’s not your own account. You lift your phone up to the guy standing at the door, smiling nicely and staying quiet. He suddenly turns around and opens the door –– you’re in. A feeling of relief crashes over you. Now, you can relax and actually enjoy the party.

Getting Grad Photos Taken

It’s the first time you’re putting your graduation outfit on with your cap and gown. You look in the mirror –– fixing your hair and practicing your smile. You suddenly stare at what is reflected back to you: the end of a journey, the finale of your college life. You’ve worked so hard to be here and have waited for these final moments in this chapter. It feels bittersweet, leaving behind your old life for something new, with a degree in hand. You let out a deep breath, maybe a little tear, and feel ready.
