He may not be our president anymore, but Donald Trump’s been making more and more headlines as of late for incredibly odd reasons — all related to these elusive “documents.” It can be hard to keep track, especially with the nature of the stories, but VALLEY is here to keep you in the loop.
Starting with a bit of a recap, on Jan. 6, 2021, the U.S. Capitol Building was attacked by a group of rioters, who had referred to their own actions as “war” in a warning to the FBI.
Trump’s involvement in the attack is the big question — there’s been a debate over whether his words and actions leading up to Jan. 6 make him partially responsible for the day’s events.
On that front, things aren’t working out very well for Trump at the moment. A recent ruling in a court case meant to determine his liability for the attack stated that the First Amendment would not protect Trump, as his comments created a “one-of-a-kind” situation.
Another recent and unique instance involving Trump involved photographs of the evident transportation of White House documents to Trump’s home in Mar-a-Lago. The Washington Post reported that the documents were clearly labeled “classified” — with some even being “top-secret” — and that it may incite further investigation into Trump.
Additionally, The New York Times reported that some of the documents requested of Trump had been torn up and taped back together, reflecting an already-confirmed tendency of his to damage official documents. Politico even has an interesting article profiling the employees responsible for taping Trump’s discarded papers back together.
There was even recent talk of Trump flushing documents down a toilet in the White House. The rumor originated from New York Times White House correspondent Maggie Haberman’s book “Confidence Man” and an Axios article discussing the book. Trump himself vehemently denied the allegation, though after the revelation of Trump ripping documents to pieces, many are skeptical — and all eyes are on him.
