If you had to wear one outfit for the rest of your life, what would you choose? A few notable articles of clothing probably came to mind.
We all have comfort pieces we tend to reach for in our closet. That pair of jeans that fit just right, the shoes that seem to go with everything or the jacket that you feel represents your personality best. Sometimes, one or two items stick with you for so long that they seem to be an extension of your body. Friends and family begin to associate you with the specific parts of your closet that seem to resonate perfectly with your personality and experiences. Just like how notable video game and cartoon characters are known by their iconic outfits, finding pieces that speak to and represent you can accumulate a better sense of self through fashion expression.

Finding Comfort in Style
Outfit repeating is both chic and sustainable, but sometimes one pair of pants, shoes or a top will stand the test of time. You begin to form an almost emotional connection to some pieces, and it could be for a variety of reasons. Maybe it’s a perfect color that complements your complexion and goes with everything. Maybe it’s a comfortable shape or material that fits just right. More often than not, though, these emotional support clothes are the ones that make you feel like your most authentic, organic self.
Forcing yourself into uncomfortable, poorly fitting or unflattering clothing can be a distracting sensory nightmare. Adjusting straps that don’t fall properly, scratching at itchy fabric or spending the night regretting a pattern choice that just doesn’t work can distract us from the things that really matter. When we intentionally choose items that not only look good, but also feel good, we are allowing ourselves the confidence to fully express our taste and personality through the way we present ourselves.

Dressing Like Yourself
The confidence that comes from wearing emotional-support pieces rubs off on the people around you, too. Friends, family, coworkers, classmates or anyone else around you will begin to subconsciously begin to associate you with that jacket, or those shoes or that specific pair of jeans. Choosing a rotation that is so personalized to yourself is a surefire way to remain memorable to everyone you encounter. You don’t have to go out of your way to choose flashy patterns or unique silhouettes either – wearing clothing as a method of self expression rather than social conformity is enough to stand out.

Treasure Hunting
Maybe your favorite outfit is store-bought and brand new, but there is a certain satisfaction that comes from finding a closet holy grail in a thrift store or as a hand-me-down. Shopping secondhand is not only more sustainable, but can also be a way to find totally unique vintage pieces. Discontinued items, high quality and unique materials and vintage patterns can all be uncovered on thrift store shelves. Thrifting is a surefire way to find pieces with personality that are also totally unique: perfect additions to the everyday rotation.
