Without a kitchen in a dorm, the meal combinations that students make up are truly one of a kind. Whatever it takes to hold someone over for a day or not spend an immense amount of money downtown. When the dining hall buffet or food stations get too old or unappetizing, the market is a good place to go and get some fuel.
But what are the ultimate struggle meals? VALLEY is here to reflect on some interesting food combinations to help the struggling freshmen out there.
The Classic: Ramen
Nothing beats a warm bowl of ramen in a dorm room (That’s kind of a lie, but it’s a canon event everyone must experience.) It’s really simple! Add water, microwave, then add the flavor packet in and it’s done.
Ramen is one of the most simple college food staples that takes less than five minutes to make, and it tastes good! The market sells numerous flavors and options of ramen for students to try out. When looking for something super simple and cheap, ramen is the way to go.

Sushi (Who Would’ve Thought?)
With some extra meal plan money to spare, the market actually offers a good array of sushi that tastes nice too. This is a better option than spending lots of money downtown at Tadashi, Tokyo or Osaka (Although those are a lot better, of course.) However, if you want to feel more sophisticated and are in the mood for a treat, market sushi is the way to go.
Poor Man’s Nachos
With no money to spare, try this recipe! All that’s needed is some shredded cheese and some tortilla chips, and that’s it. Another twist to the recipe is adding the cheese to a tortilla for a DIY Taco Bell recipe! Freshman year is truly a struggle.
The Frozen Section
Surprisingly, the frozen section of the market has decent options for students. There are premade meals that can just be warmed up and ready to eat. While not the most healthy, they give students with low motivation the chance to cook something that’s ready in just a few minutes. From Hot Pockets to Lean Cuisine, the frozen section has a lot to check out!
VALLEY gets it, freshman year is rough and fueling yourself is even more tricky as a busy college student. With the help of the dining hall and the market, struggle meals can be made and freshmen will get through this pain. After all, who’s using the communal kitchen in their dorm?
