The sun and the moon live in one universe together – allowing darkness and light to coexist.
A recent TikTok trend is showing how users have had different styles. One slide shows them as the moon –– with dark hair, dark makeup and black accenting their outfits. Another slide shows them as the sun –– with bright or blonde hair, glowy makeup and colorful clothing highlighting their tan skin. The users show a preference toward the moon or the sun, writing “I thought I was the moon, but I’m the sun,” or vice versa. The photos they choose show them in different stages of life, with one being their current and most favorite version of themselves.
But don’t we all have a little bit of both in all of us, as one can not exist without the other?

The Sun
The sun, the Earth’s heat lamp in the cold, is the blanket that covers the whole planet. In the summers, our skin soaks in its warmth, tanning our skin to darker shades. In the winters, the sun provides light in runny-nose and blue lipped weather. It gleams into our eyes, giving us hope that spring may come.
The sun brings new life to the melted Earth in the spring. Photosynthesis renews the green leaves and cherry blossoms and bright yellow daffodils. Even when the season turns to autumn with its crunchy leaves, the sun illuminates, giving a gentle hug on a cold Halloween.
During the day, the sun is the ruler of the Earth. It radiates light, allowing us to see the wonderful things that Earth houses.

The Moon
And then there is the moon –– who reflects the light of the sun during the nighttime. The moon gives the world a night light when it is dark, providing a glowing lantern –– a friend.
The moon is there at night when we feel the most lonely. We wonder in its reflection, dreaming of all of our wishes. We tell the moon all of our corrections, asking it for better days and more sleep filled nights. The moon hears our deepest questions and we hope that its milky surface will show a Magic 8 Ball. But, it stays still, as it is only a listener, not a fortune teller.
At night, the moon is our leader, guiding us when there is no light.
Just like how flowers need rain and sunlight to grow, we need the moon and the sun to be alive. The sun gives us light and warmth, while the moon gives us wonder and guidance. We may claim we are either the moon or the sun, but we still all have aspects of the other.
