Every music fan’s favorite time of year is when Spotify Wrapped comes out. It’s interesting to see the listening habits of your friends and family, even if you’re embarrassed to see your favorite musical’s soundtrack at the top of your lists. For those who don’t want to wait a whole year to get a glimpse into their listening statistics, the app Superfan gives a taste of what to expect from Wrapped at a faster rate.

Conception

Self-described as a “social app for devoted music fans”, Superfan is an app available on iOS that links to your Spotify or Apple Music account. Founder and CEO Will Matz always enjoyed talking to his friends about music and sharing songs with each other, and realized there was no social media app specifically for music.

One of the few good things to come from Ohio State, Matz minored in computer science and built the first version of the app in one weekend. In November 2022, Superfan officially launched and has seen immense success since.

The Weekly Recap

If the weekend isn’t already exciting enough, Superfan gives you a personalized recap of your listening habits every Friday at about 9pm. Using artificial intelligence, a clever caption is generated based on your top artists and genres. You can also see your top three artists, top three songs and top three genres, along with the number of times you listened to each.

Groups

Knowing your personal stats is fun, but where does the social aspect come in? Superfan gives users the ability to invite their friends to join groups where the weekly recaps of each member is shared to all members. Members can react to their friends’ recaps with emojis, and see who won awards for the week such as “least mainstream” and “life of the party”.

Along with being able to see the weekly recaps of your friends, you can also see songs they listen to each day in the “recent listens” section. In the most recent update, Superfan added “mixtapes” where you can choose from a selection of titles for the mix and collaborate on the track list with other group members. This is an easy way to put your friends onto your recent favorites without simply sending them a link.

Superfan provides music fans who love talking about their favorite artists and songs the perfect platform to do so, and has clearly set itself apart from other music apps. VALLEY members already have it and love looking at their recaps every week — it’s time for the rest of Penn State to hop on too!
