The Presidents Vs. Comedians

Ever since entertainment television was introduced, it has been an American tradition to make a joke about presidential candidates.

The media’s mockery of republican candidate Donald Trump and Democratic candidate Kamala Harris is a top comedy act right now. If you are a comedian and can pull off a good Trump or Harris impression, you’ll have the crowd belly-laughing.

The sketch comedy series Saturday Night Live (SNL) is notorious for its reputation of always being so uncensored and equally using each president’s campaign against them.

Anything For A Laugh

Last weekend, fans took a special liking to the mock Jeopardy skit including both political parties and the infamous SNL sensation, Kenan Thompson, who played the role of Steve Harvey.

President Donald Trump was played by SNL veteran James Austin Johnson and Maya Rudolph did a stunning impression of Vice President Kamala Harris. This cast was strategically picked to make sure that the audience and media would remember this skit for days after.

SNL has never had an issue with the irony of making fun of the presidential candidates. In any other setting or even on another TV series, trolls would likely blow up the comment section with a biased defense for their favored candidate.

But viewers come to SNL every Saturday night knowing there is going to be at least one skit that will make them cackle or a tear stream down their face from laughing. In a divided country like America, it is refreshing to be able to make fun of both parties equally without any backlash.

They Make It Easy

This year’s presidential debate is different though. Through press conferences, rallies and the two debates that have been held, it is almost too easy to find content for a comedy skit with these two candidates.

Just hours after the debate between President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris, viral sounds were trending on TikTok remixing Trump’s debate that “they are eating the dogs and they are eating the cats.”

The debate was meant to be a serious setting to hear out both candidates and their policies to see who can impact this country the best. Instead, it turned into a scheme that handed comedians new material on a silver platter.

SNL made sure to highlight both weak moments from the candidates on this Jeopardy skit by quoting Donald Trump from the debate and mimicking how Kamala Harris cannot go a sentence without reminding everyone she grew up middle class.

But it is all just fun and games. On SNL it is so unserious that they can get away with making a joke of just about anything.
