The Feeling is (Not) Neutral

Say goodbye to light colors and staple basics. Well, not really, but you know what we mean. There’s a new trend in town and it’s maximalism. From extravagant hairstyles, out-there accessories and bright-colored pieces, here’s everything you need to know to be a maximalist this season (sorry Matilda Djerf).

While we all thought that the extravagant patterns and colors of the 80s died then and there, VALLEY thinks this contagious new hot-girl mindset has translated into our fashion sense. The difference between then and now, however, is that we’re not afraid to stand out in the crowd. This year, it’s about breaking out of our comfort zones and having fun with our closets. So break out the argyle and paisley, because it’s here to stay. From bikinis to balaclavas, bold is the new minimal.

So if you’re ever in need of some inspiration to take from outside of your Pinterest, or feel the need to treat yourself and invest in a new statement piece, here are some brands to be on the lookout for:

So who do we have to thank for ruining our bank accounts and stocking our closets? Well for starters, our Instagrams. Our social media feeds have become our new source of runway inspiration and while there are millions of users to choose from, here are some of VALLEY’s favorites when it comes to maximalism:

Now if there’s one thing we can pick up from these style icons, it’s these keywords: patterns, texture and color. It’s about coloring outside the lines and taking risks, so go for it. Don’t be afraid to mix leather with lace or even create a leather on leather look for your own Pamela Anderson moment. If mixing patterns is too much, start small with statement pieces like a Burberry-esque plaid to elevate your business casual office look. Boom. You’re the coolest one in the office.

Even though we’re in State College, it doesn’t mean we can’t spice up our bar outfits for our nights out on the town. You can’t deny the feeling of power and the rush that comes with commanding a room with your outfit. It’s almost addicting. Besides, we need to get our practice in before we hit the big leagues like New York or Los Angeles street style.
