The F-word

Yeah…that one word, I know you’re thinking of it right now. It’s a dirty word, disrespectful even. People tend to avoid using it because it causes conflict and fighting, so we generally stay away from it. Oh wait hold on. No no no, not that one. We’re talking about feminism.

Why are people scared of the F-word?

Honestly, this question still remains to be answered. People may think we have progressed as a society, which we certainly have a lot, but there is still a long way to go.

Most people, women and men, have internalized misogyny that shows in their actions and what they say. As a community we need to step forward and confront ourselves and others around us, because we deserve to live in a world that is fair and equal.

Although many women are silenced or scared to speak out against the hardships we face, there are a few women who have stepped forward and their bravery does not go unnoticed.

Women Making Waves

Drew Afualo, 29 years old, has amassed over 8 million followers on TikTok for her funny yet educational content about the importance of activism. The usual Drew Afualo video consists of her watching a video of a man say something misogynistic and rightfully so, she will completely bash the man in the video proving with real life ideas why they are wrong and how they should fix their concept of women to be more inclusive and comprehensive. Afualo also recently came to Penn State and presented riveting ideas about deleting one’s internal bias in order to be a better functioning member of society.

Brittany Broski, 27 years old, has almost 11.5 million followers on TikTok. Although she is not known as a feminist, but rather a TikTok and Youtube personality, she actually has a great deal of experience when it comes to dealing with misogyny and similar ideas. As a female comedian, she is in a very male dominated industry. She has even gone on to speak out and confront the people that say she is not funny because she is just a woman.

These are just two examples of women who have joined the fight against the patriarchy. The fight against sexism has recently been pushed under the rug, but we need to lift up that rug and throw it across the room. Find your voice, take a stand, and don’t be afraid to say the f-word.
