Thank you to our home away from home

As students are beginning to pack up and leave for the summer, it is easy to want to get the heck out of State College and back to the comfort of our own homes. Whether you’re traveling 30 minutes out of State College, or all the way across the coast, home cooked meals and the feeling of your childhood bed are some of the best feelings for a college student. With that being said, the beauty of State College can sometimes be overlooked, so we should appreciate these last moments before school is out for the summer.

Friendships

Not having to drive 20 minutes to see a friend. Being able to walk one floor down to borrow a going out top. Running into your friends at the gym. “Let’s all go to the dining hall right now.” Having all of your friends within a five minute distance from you is one of the biggest luxuries of any college campus. One that the summer time away makes us realize. Thank you State College for not only introducing us to our best friends, but for making it so easy to spend time with them.

Convenience

Home cooked meals are something we all long for while we are away, but when leaving State College it’s easy to miss the convenience of everything being so close. The simple luxury of walking two minutes outside your dorm to get a bite to eat, or being able to pay for everything on your meal plan and pretend it’s all free.

Fun

While the town may be small, there is always something to do in State College. From frat parties to bars, club meetings to playing pickleball, you never have to be bored if you don’t want to be in State College. A nice break for the summer is well deserved, but appreciate the culture and liveliness within our little bubble.

Comfort

For those going home to big cities, appreciate the slow speed of state college. Be grateful for the fast moving traffic and clear roads, and not having to worry about homeless men on the side of the road while you are walking home. Appreciate the comfort of knowing when you get on the bus the majority of the people are your Penn State peers. The slow speed of State College is often overlooked or viewed as boring, but is a beautiful thing that deserves our appreciation and love.

So, as your final suitcase is being packed during this move out season, look around the State College greenery and simply appreciate our college home. Tag @VALLEYmag on Instagram what you’ll miss about Penn State!
